Does Chinese foreign direct investment harm CO2 emissions in the Belt and Road Economies

Riazullah Shinwari et al.

Summary: This paper examines the influence of China's foreign direct investments on the carbon emissions of 35 Belt and Road Initiative countries from 2000 to 2019. The results show that Chinese investments have not contributed to the deterioration of the environment in these countries, unlike investments from other countries. This highlights the importance of source and destination regulations in terms of environmental impact and carbon emissions in the Belt and Road Initiative countries.

Impact of equity market development on renewable energy consumption: Do the role of FDI, trade openness and economic growth matter in Asian economies?

Aviral Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: Using panel data from 16 Asian economies between 1990 to 2019, this study examines the impact of equity market development on renewable energy consumption, taking into account factors such as foreign direct investment (FDI), trade openness, and economic growth. The findings suggest that equity markets have an insignificant effect on renewable energy consumption in the Asian region. Instead, expanding trade activities and improving economic growth are found to significantly decrease energy consumption through technical effects. Additionally, the study reveals that equity market development encourages renewable energy projects in countries with relatively more developed equity markets, while FDI promotes renewable energy consumption in countries where capital is relatively scarce.

Renewable energy consumption in economic sectors in the EU-27. The impact on economics, environment and conventional energy sources. A 20-year perspective

Magdalena Tutak et al.

Summary: The main reason for the ongoing process of energy transition in the global economy is the need to protect the environment, especially the climate. Increased public awareness about the destruction of the Earth's ecosystem and technological development have resulted in increased importance of renewable energy sources, which are increasingly replacing conventional sources. Particularly ambitious plans in this area are presented by the European Union, which is the undisputed leader in introducing pro-environmental legislation. The study showed a significant increase in the consumption of energy from renewable energy sources in the European Union countries in the studied period, as well as significant differences in the use of this energy among the studied countries, their groups and sectors. Also, it was found that renewable energy sources based energy consumption has a positive impact on economic growth, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the reduction of conventional energy consumption in practically all European Union countries. The results obtained indicate that this impact is greater in the old than in the new European Union countries.

Cross-country spillovers of renewable energy promotion-The case of Germany

Jan Abrell et al.

Summary: Electricity generation based on renewable energy sources can replace expensive generators relying on fossil fuels, leading to lower electricity prices and carbon emissions. The merit-order effect in interconnected electricity systems causes changes in trade flows and decreases conventional generation and prices in neighboring countries. German renewable energy generation offset a significant amount of CO2 emissions, with the costs primarily borne by German market participants.

Riazullah Shinwari et al.

Summary: This study examines the factors influencing investment in renewable energy sources in China from 1990 to 2020. The results show that economic performance, technological innovation, and energy efficiency have a positive impact on investment in renewable energy, while natural resource volatility has a negative impact. The findings of this study have important implications for international organizations and other stakeholders in developing renewable energy policies.

Summary: This study explores and compares the impact of human capital on economic growth at different stages of development using a panel of 141 countries. The findings show that all aspects of human capital have a positive influence on growth in developing countries, especially life expectancy gain. However, in developed countries, increased life expectancy poses a drag on economic growth, likely due to the aging population and dependency ratio.

ASSESSMENT OF EXPORT-LED GROWTH HYPOTHESIS: THE CASE OF BANGLADESH, CHINA, INDIA AND MYANMAR

Md. Monirul Islam et al.

Summary: Asian countries, including Bangladesh, China, India, and Myanmar, have witnessed impressive economic growth rates due to their trade performance in the international market. This study investigates the export-led growth hypothesis for these countries and finds evidence of co-integration and causal relationships between variables. The results indicate that the export-led growth theory applies to China, while the growth-led export hypothesis is valid for Myanmar.

Festus Fatai Adedoyin et al.

Summary: This study re-examines the export-led growth hypothesis (ELGH) with a focus on the impact of economic policy uncertainty and geopolitical risks on Malaysia's economic growth. The empirical results suggest that economic policy uncertainty has a negative impact on growth, while the impact of geopolitical risks is uncertain but may have a positive effect in the long run. The study recommends that the Malaysian government ensure macroeconomic and political stability to achieve export-driven growth.

India's renewable energy: New insights from multi-regional input output and structural decomposition analysis

Qiang Wang et al.

Summary: India's energy scenario has long been plagued by deficit, security threats, and low efficiency, and the key to solving this dilemma lies in developing renewable energy supply. The study identifies that India's consumption of renewable energy is dominated by domestic consumption, but international trade is playing an increasingly important role. Developing countries have a greater contribution to India's renewable energy consumption, and India should focus on cooperation with these countries to increase efficiency and consumption of renewable energy.

FDI, Export Sophistication, and Quality Upgrading: Evidence from China's WTO Accession

Yunong Li et al.

Summary: This study identifies a positive effect of FDI liberalization on manufacturing export sophistication, particularly in terms of the export share of foreign-invested enterprises and firms with processing trade, as well as the export sophistication of privately-owned enterprises, ordinary trade, and intermediate goods. The intensive margin, as opposed to the extensive margin, is found to be responsible for this effect, with no significant impact on product quality observed from liberalizing FDI.
