Local residents' attitudes about wind farms and associated noise annoyance in South Korea

Jaehong Ki et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors related to local residents' attitudes and annoyance towards wind farms in South Korea. The perceived fairness of the development process, visual evaluation of wind farms, and thoughts on increasing wind energy were found to be influential in shaping residents' attitudes. Meanwhile, the current attitude towards existing wind farms, along with factors related to visibility and visual evaluation, were found to be significant in determining noise annoyance levels.

Thorough economic and carbon footprint analysis of overall hydrogen supply for different hydrogen carriers from overseas production to inland distribution

Ayeon Kim et al.

Summary: This study conducted an economic and carbon footprint analysis of overall hydrogen supply from overseas to inland for several hydrogen carriers, including liquid hydrogen, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, and ammonia. The analysis found that in the ship transportation sector, there were cross-overs between unit hydrogen costs of liquid organic hydrogen carriers and liquid hydrogen at around 4,000 km and 1 million tons of hydrogen in trends according to distance and amount, respectively. Additionally, for the distribution sector, pipeline was significantly feasible due to the large amount, while trailers showed feasibility with hydrogen amount less than around 4,500 tons for delivery sector. A case study of importing hydrogen from Indonesia to Korea demonstrated feasibility with all unit hydrogen costs below the 2030 target as stipulated in the Korean roadmap, as well as provided guidance on which sector contributes majorly and should be improved technically and strategically to fulfill the 2040 target in the roadmap. An uncertainty analysis on the overall carbon footprint for the case study was also conducted to indicate the future risks of carbon emission from the immature technology.

The Direct Reduction of Iron Ore with Hydrogen

Shuo Li et al.

Summary: The steel industry accounts for about 7% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions, with the direct reduction of iron ore using hydrogen considered to have high potential to reduce CO2 emissions. This research investigated the kinetics and fluidization characteristics of Fe2O3 powder in a vibrated fluidized bed reactor for H-2 reduction. The study showed high yield of direct H-2-driven reduction with smooth bubbling fluidization achieved.

Comparative sustainability assessment of a hydrogen supply network for hydrogen refueling stations in Korea - a techno-economic and lifecycle assessment perspective

Malik Sajawal Akhtar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the economic and environmental aspects of green hydrogen supply routes for hydrogen refueling stations in South Korea, with a focus on three different supply cases. It was found that the capital costs of solar electricity and the electrolyzer were main factors influencing the levelized costs of hydrogen. On-site hydrogen production via water electrolysis powered by solar electricity is the most environmentally friendly option.
