A modified connectivity link addition strategy to improve the resilience of multiplex networks against attacks

Dongming Fan et al.

Summary: Current studies have shifted from the analysis of single-layer network to multi-layer network. However, the performance of multi-layer networks has been significantly influenced by inevitable disturbances; therefore, the resilience of such networks must be maintained. Previous studies on the resilience of multi-layer networks have mainly focused on interdependent networks rather than on multiplex networks, which means that the effectiveness of current methods to improve the resilience of multiplex networks remains limited. This study develops a two-layer multiplex network and describes failure propagation models by motifs in single-layer and multiplex networks, proposes an approach to evaluate the resilience of multiplex networks, and presents strategies for its improvement.

Critical facility accessibility rapid failure early-warning detection and redundancy mapping in urban flooding

Utkarsh Gangwal et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a network-theory-based detection model to identify the critical point after which the rate of road access loss to critical facilities starts to accelerate, aiming to detect the early warning of the rapid critical facilities accessibility loss after flooding. The case study using the road network of Harris County, Texas during Hurricane Harvey 2017 flooding and simulated 500-year flooding demonstrates the impact of flooding on daily life. The result of this research can facilitate decision-making on targeted infrastructure protection and reveal the resource redundancy inequity and risk disparity across the network when integrated with social vulnerability mapping.

Summary: Waterway transportation is a critical means of transportation, and risk management is important for ensuring its safe operation. This study introduces the concept of resilience to analyze the resilience of waterway transportation systems by simulating disruptions at different stages of the resilience recovery cycle. A comprehensive resilience indicator is proposed, which includes ship load, ship delay, and recovery cost. The study uses a simulation model based on discrete-event to evaluate the resilience of the Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed indicator in comparing different rescue plans and providing practical suggestions.

Vulnerability assessments of weighted urban rail transit networks with integrated coupled map lattices

Jianhua Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an integrated coupled map lattices (ICML) to assess the vulnerability of weighted urban rail transit networks (URTNs) under external disturbance R. By refining passenger flow and adopting three parameters, the model is verified using Nanjing metro network. Results show a linear relationship between node and edge betweenness, and URTNs are susceptible to attacks and become more vulnerable with increased external disturbance. Furthermore, attacks based on largest degree nodes and highest betweenness nodes have different impacts on URTNs, with critical thresholds identified for smashing the network.
