The latent failure probability: A conceptual basis for robust, reliability-based and risk-based design optimization

Andre T. Beck et al.

Summary: The safety of structural systems is influenced by various non-structural factors such as social, political, financial, organizational, behavioral aspects, etc. These factors introduce significant uncertainties that need to be addressed in the design optimization process. In this manuscript, a procedure is formalized to handle these non-technical factors and/or epistemic uncertainties in structural design optimization. Latent failure probabilities, subjective point-estimates capturing non-technical factors and/or epistemic uncertainties, are suggested to be incorporated into the nominal member failure probabilities calculated from objective technical uncertainties. The importance of considering these latent failure probabilities in robust and risk-based design optimization is emphasized.

An info-gap framework for robustness assessment of epistemic uncertainty models in hybrid structural reliability analysis

Antoine Ajenjo et al.

Summary: The main objective of this work is to study the impact of the choice of input uncertainty models on robustness evaluations for probabilities of failure. Aleatory and epistemic uncertainties are jointly propagated by considering hybrid models and applying random set theory. The notion of horizon of uncertainty found in the info-gap method allows to compare the bounds on the probability of failure obtained from different epistemic uncertainty models at increasing levels of uncertainty. Info-gap robustness and opportuneness curves are obtained and compared for various uncertainty models, and a specific demand value is used as a metric to quantify the gain of information on the probability of failure.

Hybrid uncertainty propagation and reliability analysis using direct probability integral method and exponential convex model

Zeng Meng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new hybrid exponential model to address the lack of research on aleatory and epistemic uncertainties in both static and dynamic systems. The model combines probabilistic and non-probabilistic exponential models to accurately measure uncertainty propagation and reliability evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and universality of the proposed model.

The DIRECT algorithm: 25 years Later

Donald R. Jones et al.

Summary: The DIRECT global optimization algorithm introduced in 1993 provides a fresh approach to minimizing black-box functions with lower and upper bounds on variables. It balances local and global search in a unique way, but may be slow in fine-tuning solutions to high accuracy. Various researchers have extended DIRECT to improve its performance on different test functions.

Active learning line sampling for rare event analysis

Jingwen Song et al.

Summary: This paper aims to improve the efficiency and accuracy of Line Sampling (LS) algorithm through active learning and Gaussian process regression (GPR). A new learning function and adaptive algorithm are designed to enable the GPR model to accurately estimate the intersection points for all lines in LS scheme and increase the number of lines if necessary to improve the accuracy of failure probability estimation.

Stochastic analysis and validation under aleatory and epistemic uncertainties

Austin M. McKeand et al.

Summary: The framework proposed in this study accounts for both aleatory and epistemic uncertainties in stochastic simulations of turbine engine components, and it is validated by comparing predictions with experimental results using a mean curve validation method. The application results demonstrate that this framework can effectively reduce engineering complexity and provide accurate results when both types of uncertainties are present.

Efficient procedure for failure probability function estimation in augmented space

Xiukai Yuan et al.

Summary: A novel procedure is proposed to estimate the failure probability function of design variables without distribution fitting, by transforming it into an expression that includes the posterior distribution and allowing it to be estimated by means of sampling. The proposed method shows efficient estimation of FPF within different simulation strategies and numerical examples demonstrate its performance.
