Contribution of integrated watershed management (IWM) to disaster risk reduction and community development: Lessons from Nepal

Prakash Singh Thapa et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the contributions of integrated watershed management (IWM) to disaster risk reduction and community development in three case study sites in Nepal. The study shows a significant reduction in disasters, improved land cover, and multiple benefits to the community, including an increase in forest cover and water levels. However, challenges remain in terms of coordination among different sectors and the prioritization of disaster risk reduction. Therefore, prioritizing disaster risk reduction actions in IWM and strengthening upstream-downstream linkages are necessary for enhancing the socio-ecological resilience of the watersheds.

Ecosystem-based adaptation for increased agricultural productivity by smallholder farmers in Nepal

Kiran Bhusal et al.

Summary: The impacts of climate change on agriculture, especially in mountainous countries like Nepal, are severe. This paper provides scientific evidence for the effectiveness of traditionally used practices, such as jholmal and straw mulching, in improving crop yield and reducing pest infestation. These practices offer simple and affordable solutions to help smallholder farmers adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change.

Protected areas in the Hindu Kush Himalaya: A regional assessment of the status, distribution, and gaps

Sunita Chaudhary et al.

Summary: Protected areas are crucial for biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. Efforts have been made to establish protected areas globally, but assessment on protected areas in mountain regions like the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) is lacking. This study found that while the HKH has a significant number of protected areas, there are limitations in terms of ecological representation.

Adapting transformation and transforming adaptation to climate change using a pathways approach

Matthew J. Colloff et al.

Summary: Adaptive transformation requires intentional transformative adaptation (ITA), achieved through a mix of incremental and transformative co-production processes to transform social-ecological systems. While ITA approaches help overcome adaptation challenges, there are still issues in practice, requiring different processes for resolution.

Achieving the climate goal with intergovernmental transfers to the forestry sector: insights from the Indian experience

Purnamita Dasgupta et al.

Summary: Forests are crucial for climate change mitigation and adaptation. However, financial transfers for forest conservation in India did not always lead to desired outcomes, highlighting the importance of incorporating ecological values, particularly carbon values, in financial allocation decisions. Directly incentivizing subnational entities may be more effective than indirect approaches in achieving conservation and afforestation goals.

Ecosystem services research trends in the water tower of Asia: A bibliometric analysis from the Hindu Kush Himalaya

Pratikshya Kandel et al.

Summary: The study provides a comprehensive overview of ecosystem services research in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region, revealing a growing trend in publications, with most studies conducted in China, Nepal, and India. The most commonly used keywords in journal articles are "ecosystem services," and there is a lack of social and political aspects in existing research, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Human-wildlife conflict in the roof of the world: Understanding multidimensional perspectives through a systematic review

Prashanti Sharma et al.

Summary: Human-wildlife conflicts have escalated in recent years, particularly in the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. The focus of studies has mainly been on protected areas, with large carnivores and mega herbivores playing significant roles in these conflicts due to habitat disturbance from land-cover change, urbanization, and population growth. Both traditional protection techniques and an increase in publications and global interest show a growing recognition of the importance of managing human-wildlife interactions.
