Unemployment Insurance and Opioid Overdose Mortality in the United States

Pinghui Wu et al.

Summary: Over the past two decades, opioid overdose deaths have contributed to a significant increase in overall mortality among non-Hispanic Whites. Previous studies on the role of local labor market conditions in opioid overdose mortality have yielded mixed results. This study finds that income support policies, such as unemployment insurance, moderate the relationship between job loss and county opioid overdose death rates, suggesting that social policies have played a crucial role in disrupting this link.

Does socioeconomic status affect hospital utilization and health outcomes of chronic disease patients?

Jongsay Yong et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of socioeconomic status on hospital utilization and adverse events among chronic disease patients, finding that disadvantaged patients tend to have higher costs, longer hospital stays, and higher incidence of adverse events compared to non-disadvantaged patients. Further analysis shows that these adverse events indirectly contribute to a significant portion of the cost difference between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged patients.
