Can prescribed fires restore C4 grasslands invaded by a C3 woody species and a co-dominant C3 grass species?

R. James Ansley et al.

Summary: The study found that summer fires were effective at top-killing mesquite vegetation, with less than 3% of vegetation root-killed. Transition fires in alternate seasons could increase C-4 mid-grass vegetation, but had no effect on Texas wintergrass. In contrast, repeated winter fires did not impact C-4 mid-grass or Texas wintergrass compared to the unburned control group.
