Image processing techniques and spectral character analysis were used to evaluate the radiation shielding properties of the rocks. Summary: Evaluating the radiation shielding behavior of rocks is important for construction purposes. This study investigated the radiation shielding properties of Neoarchean mafic and ultramafic rocks from the Bhavani Shear Zone in southern India. The results showed that different band combinations and techniques can effectively discriminate and map the rock types and distribution. Additionally, a feasible container design for disposing of radioactive wastes was proposed using Monte Carlo simulation.

The influence of MgO on the radiation protection and mechanical properties of tellurite glasses

Summary: The mechanical moduli and microhardness of TeO2-MgO glasses were theoretically calculated using the Makishimae-Mackenzie model, showing improved properties with higher MgO content. The radiation shielding capacity of the studied glasses was evaluated, with TM10 glass exhibiting the highest linear attenuation coefficient and TM45 glass showing the lowest value. The BXCOM program was used to calculate the effective atomic number and buildup factors of the glasses, as well as the effective removal cross-section for fast neutrons.

Impact of Bi2O3 modifier concentration on barium-zincborate glasses: physical, structural, elastic, and radiation-shielding properties

Summary: A series of Bi2O3 varying BZX glasses were fabricated by melt-quenching method and examined for their physical, structural, elastic, and radiation-shielding properties. With increasing Bi2O3 concentration, the BZX glasses exhibited higher ionic nature and linear attenuation coefficient values. Among the investigated samples, BZ30 glass was identified as the more effective shield due to its highest MAC and LAC values.

Structural, optical and nuclear radiation shielding properties of strontium barium borate glasses doped with dysprosium and niobium

Summary: In this study, five new strontium barium borate glasses doped with dysprosium ion and different concentrations of niobium pentoxide were synthesized. The glasses were investigated for their physical, structural, optical and gamma radiation shielding properties. It was found that the addition of niobium pentoxide increased the boron-boron distance and oxygen packing density, while decreasing the molar volume of oxygen.

Summary: The systematic study investigated the structural, thermal, linear, and non-linear optical properties of glasses synthesized by melt-quenching technique. Thulium ions were found to have a dominant impact on modifying the glassy matrix properties, enhancing lasing capabilities and acting as an excellent optical limiter for mid-infrared sources. The presence of NBO, rare earth dopants, and hydroxyl impurities were identified through structural studies, optical absorption spectra, and infrared spectroscopy, respectively.

Results showed that increasing the CaO content led to improved radiation protection efficiency of the glasses.
