Performance evaluation of microbial fuel cell using a radiation synthesized low density polyethylene-grafted-poly (glycidyl methacrylate-co-vinyl acetate) as a proton exchange membrane

Hanan M. Abd-Elmabood et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the synthesis of a proton exchange membrane for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) that can simultaneously produce bioelectricity and treat domestic wastewater. The membrane was prepared through ionizing irradiation-induced graft copolymerization and sulfonation processes. The prepared membranes were characterized for their structural, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties, as well as physicochemical characteristics. The results confirmed the successful preparation of a suitable membrane for the proposed application. Additionally, the performance of the assembled MFC was thoroughly investigated, including its electrochemical behavior and wastewater treatment capability. The study found that the sulfonated LDPE-g-P(GMA-co-VAc) membrane with an 80% grafting degree showed substantial removal of chemical oxygen demand and had promising power density.

Novel polycarbonate membrane embedded with multi-walled carbon nanotube for water treatment: a comparative study between bovine serum albumin and humic acid removal

Homayun Khezraqa et al.

Summary: Flat sheet polycarbonate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PC/MWCNT) nanocomposite membranes with different nanoparticle contents were prepared using the phase inversion method. Membrane characteristics were analyzed, and membranes containing 0.1 wt% MWCNTs showed better hydrophilicity, porosity, PWF, and mechanical properties. Addition of 0.1 wt% MWCNTs led to significant improvement in fouling recovery ratio in filtration of humic acid and bovine serum albumin.

Effective removal of 137Cs ions from radioactive wastewater by Melamine-Styrene based Polymer (MSP)

Erhan Karabayir et al.

Summary: In this study, a melamine styrene-based conjugated polymer (MSP) was synthesized and characterized for the removal of Cs-137 from radioactive waste. The adsorption behavior and rate of MSP were investigated under various parameters, with Langmuir isotherm showing a maximum adsorption capacity of 78 mg g(-1) for Cs+ ions. The pseudo second order kinetic model was found to be the most appropriate for the adsorption of Cs-137 onto MSP.

Selective and highly efficient removal of uranium from radioactive effluents by activated carbon functionalized with 2-aminobenzoic acid as a new sorbent

Majid Mohammad Nezhad et al.

Summary: The study aimed to modify activated carbon for the removal of uranium ions by introducing carboxyl groups and selective ligands. Characterization confirmed successful functionalization of the sorbent surface with oxygen and amine groups. The modified sorbent showed significantly improved sorption capacity for uranium ions compared to the unmodified activated carbon.

Kinetic modelling of the uranium biosorption by Deinococcus radiodurans biofilm

T. Manobala et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the kinetic modeling of uranium biosorption by Deinococcus radiodurans biofilm biomass, indicating the process is spontaneous and exothermic. The sorption of U(VI) by D. radiodurans biofilm biomass is suggested to follow a pseudosecond-order reaction. Chemical modifications in surface functional groups of the biofilm biomass significantly impact uranium binding capacity.
