Diachronic quantitative snow avalanche risk assessment as a function of forest cover changes

Taline Zgheib et al.

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive quantitative snow avalanche risk assessment method that evaluates the impact of forest cover changes on the probability distribution of runout distances, impact pressures, and subsequent risk estimates. A case study in the French Alps shows that forest cover can significantly reduce avalanche risk for buildings located downslope. The study also suggests that combining nature-based solutions with traditional structural measures can effectively reduce risk at reasonable costs.

Snow-avalanche hazard assessment based on dendrogeomorphic reconstructions and classification tree algorithms for ski area development, Para circumflex accent ng Mountains, Romania

Daniel Germain et al.

Summary: This paper explores the snow-avalanche regime and analyzes its triggering weather conditions based on tree-ring reconstructions and classification tree algorithms. The study shows an increased frequency of avalanche events on Zavoaie NE slope compared to Scaria SW slope in the latter half of the 20th century. Classification tree models reveal three different weather scenarios leading to avalanche release. Furthermore, tree ring analysis calculates return periods and runout distances, indicating a high risk for the planned ski area expansion. This highlights the usefulness of dendrogeomorphology in natural hazard assessment where historical data is lacking.

Upslope migration of snow avalanches in a warming climate

Florie Giacona et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Vosges Mountains in France experienced a significant change in snow avalanche activity from 1850 to 1920, with a decrease in the number of avalanches, reduction in size, shorter seasons, and migration towards higher elevations in response to winter warming.

Climate drivers of large magnitude snow avalanche years in the US northern Rocky Mountains

Erich H. Peitzsch et al.

Summary: The study found that historically, large magnitude avalanche years were associated with stormy winters and positive snowpack anomalies, while recent decades have been increasingly influenced by warmer temperatures and shallow snowpack. The amount of snowpack is directly related to avalanche probability, and with climate warming causing reductions in snowpack, there has been a decline in large magnitude avalanche probability.

A regional spatiotemporal analysis of large magnitude snow avalanches using tree rings

Erich Peitzsch et al.

Summary: The study utilized dendrochronological methods to investigate the historical patterns of large magnitude avalanches in the northern Rocky Mountains region of the United States. Results showed variations in avalanche activity across different time periods and spatial scales, highlighting the importance of sample size, scale, and spatial extent in deriving a regional chronology of large magnitude avalanche events from tree-ring records.
