Age of the oldest known Homo sapiens from eastern Africa

Celine M. Vidal et al.

Summary: This article reports new dating evidence that pushes back the age of the oldest modern human fossils in eastern Africa to before 200,000 years ago. The study also challenges previous arguments about the stratigraphic relationships and tephra correlations and provides new evidence for the minimum age of the fossils.

Examining sediment infill dynamics at Naracoorte cave megafauna sites using multiple luminescence dating signals

L. J. Arnold et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term sediment accumulation dynamics of Naracoorte Cave Complex (NCC) solution pipe cavities and evaluates the suitability of different luminescence dating signals for improving current chronologies at NCC sites. The study reveals the complex accumulation history of NCC solution pipes and suggests that they may exert taphonomic biases on fossil accumulation. The research highlights the need to consider the impact of NCC solution pipe dynamics on reconstructing long-term paleoecological histories.

Orbital controls on eastern African hydroclimate in the Pleistocene

Rachel L. Lupien et al.

Summary: Understanding the ancient climate of eastern Africa is crucial for understanding early human evolution and migration. This study presents records of rainfall from ancient lake sediments, providing insights into the control mechanisms of Pleistocene climate in the region. The results suggest that eastern African rainfall was mainly influenced by low-latitude summer insolation during the early and middle Pleistocene, with little impact from glacial-interglacial cycles. However, high-latitude-driven climate processes emerged during the last interglacial to the present, when glacial-interglacial cycles were strong. The findings highlight the variable response of eastern African rainfall to different forcing mechanisms throughout time.

Luminescence chronology of fossiliferous fluvial sediments along the middle Atbara River, Sudan

S. Tsukamoto et al.

Summary: Fluvial sediments in the middle Atbara River Valley in eastern Sudan contain a significant number of vertebrate fossils and stone tools. Previous research identified two sedimentary units, the Butana Bridge Synthem (BBS) and the Khashm El Girba Synthem (KGS), with specific divisions within each unit. This study aimed to establish a more detailed chronology of these sedimentary layers through luminescence dating. The results provided revised dates for the entire BBS-KGS sequence.

Regional-scale interactions between groundwater and surface water under changing aridity: evidence from the River Awash Basin, Ethiopia

Seifu Kebede et al.

Summary: Rarely investigated relationships between surface waters and groundwaters at basin scale have been studied in the River Awash Basin of Ethiopia, with evidence from geochemical tracers and piezometry. Results show that rivers act as a source of recharge rather than a sink for groundwater discharge, and regional groundwater flow from the highlands exits the catchment. This suggests that groundwater abstraction from regional aquifers in the lowlands is not anticipated to impact river flow, though salinity poses a significant threat to irrigation and water supply.

Holocene East African monsoonal variations recorded in wave-dominated clastic paleo-shorelines of Lake Abhe, Central Afar region (Ethiopia & Djibouti)

Carlo Mologni et al.

Summary: In tropical Africa, the impact of Late Pleistocene-Holocene climatic fluctuations on continental hydro-systems is significant. The dynamics of the 'African Humid Period' are still not fully understood, requiring investigation into specific hydro-sedimentary basins to improve spatial and chronological patterns understanding. The study on Lake Abhe in the Afar Depression reveals that the Holocene lake level fluctuations are influenced by hydro-climatic, tectonic, and local geomorphic controls.

Integrative geochronology calibrates the Middle and Late Stone Ages of Ethiopia's Afar Rift

Elizabeth M. Niespolo et al.

Summary: The Halibee member of the Upper Dawaitoli Formation in Ethiopia's Middle Awash study area contains a wealth of paleoanthropological resources from the Middle and Later Stone Age. By combining radioisotopic methods and a newly developed dating method for ostrich eggshell, researchers were able to establish the chronology of these artifacts and fossils, providing important insights into technological, environmental, and evolutionary changes during the African Middle and Late Pleistocene.

Patterns of aeolian deposition in subtropical Australia through the last glacial and deglacial periods

Richard J. Lewis et al.

Summary: The study presents geochemical and geochronological analyses of a 60 ka sedimentary record from Brown Lake in subtropical Queensland. The findings indicate a positive trend of dust deposition starting from around 50 ka, with the highest influx occurring leading into the Last Glacial Maximum. An inter-site comparison suggests enhanced moisture stress regionally during the last glaciation and throughout the LGM, returning to a more positive moisture balance around 8 ka.

Hydroclimate changes in eastern Africa over the past 200,000 years may have influenced early human dispersal

Frank Schaebitz et al.

Summary: A drying trend in East Africa followed by cycles of high millennial to centennial climate variability between 200,000 and 60,000 years ago may have influenced the dispersal of human populations. The reconstructions of climatic and environmental conditions contribute to debates about early human dispersal factors within and beyond Africa. The multi-proxy paleoclimate record from Chew Bahir in Ethiopia reveals two modes of climate change associated with specific human behaviors.
