Evolution of the European regional large mammals assemblages in the end of the Middle Pleistocene - The first half of the Late Pleistocene (MIS 6-MIS 4)

A. Yu. Puzachenko et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transition of European large mammal fauna during the Middle Pleistocene-Late Pleistocene period by analyzing data across 18 European regional faunal assemblages. It examines changes in faunal composition, biodiversity parameters, and species turnover index within the MIS 6-MIS 4 time interval. Additionally, the study compares the evolution of European fauna during different transitions and explores the impact of global temperature changes on these transitions.

Pliocene to Middle Pleistocene climate history in the Guadix-Baza Basin, and the environmental conditions of early Homo dispersal in Europe

Juha Saarinen et al.

Summary: By analyzing dental ecometrics of early and middle Pleistocene human sites as well as large herbivorous mammals, it was found that early Pleistocene humans tended to occupy diverse habitats like woodlands and savannas, while middle Pleistocene humans adapted to a wider range of environments but showed a preference for wooded paleoenvironments.

A review on Bison schoetensacki and its closest relatives through the early-Middle Pleistocene transition: Insights from the Vallparadis Section (NE Iberian Peninsula) and other European localities

Leonardo Sorbelli et al.

Summary: The study revised the European fossil record of Bison species, focusing on the Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition period. It confirmed the taxonomic validity of B. schoetensacki and identified distinct eco-morphotypes of European bison between the late Early Pleistocene and the beginning of the Holocene based on the size and proportions of the metapodials. The research highlighted the importance of caution in systematic studies based on postcranial material due to the great morphological homogeneity within the genus.

On the Cause of the Mid-Pleistocene Transition

C. J. Berends et al.

Summary: The Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) remains one of the most intriguing unsolved issues in paleoclimatology, involving the shift from 41 to approximately 100 kyr glacial cycles. Various physical mechanisms have been proposed to explain the MPT, but significant gaps in understanding remain. Future model experiments focusing on quantitative differences between these mechanisms could help interpret observational evidence and potentially provide new insights into the MPT.
