The potential of numerical prediction systems to support the design of Arctic observing systems: Insights from the APPLICATE and YOPP projects

Irina Sandu et al.

Summary: The numerical systems used for weather and climate predictions have significantly improved, reaching a sufficient level of maturity to assess the Earth's observing systems. Recent international efforts focused on Arctic observation systems demonstrate the added value of existing or hypothetical Arctic observations with numerical prediction systems.

Relative impact of observations on a regional Arctic numerical weather prediction system

Roger Randriamampianina et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the impact of Arctic conventional and satellite observations on regional short-range weather forecasts using observing-system experiments. The results indicate that observation assimilation in lateral boundary conditions has the most significant impact on upper-air forecast skill, while the impact on surface fields during the winter period is mainly from regional data assimilation.
