Planned greenspace or natural greenspace in a high-density city with compact environment? An empirical study of osteoporosis among senior

Hung Chak Ho et al.

Summary: An empirical study found that factors such as age, gender, low education, smoking, and chronic respiratory diseases are associated with osteoporosis. Higher percentage of planned greenspace surrounding the residence may protect against osteoporosis, whereas natural greenspace does not influence individuals. Therefore, improving planned greenspace in urban areas could be a potential strategy for preventing osteoporosis and improving quality of life for the senior population.

Spatial uncertainty and environment-health association: An empirical study of osteoporosis among old residents in public housing estates across a hilly environment

Hung Chak Ho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of built environment on osteoporosis in elderly residents in Hong Kong. It found that traditional methods using 2-dimensional circular buffers may introduce bias, and highlighted the importance of considering local terrain and road network to define a walkable neighborhood for accurate environment-health estimations.

Observed inequality in urban greenspace exposure in China

Yimeng Song et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the majority of Chinese cities face high inequality in urban greenspace exposure, with disparities varying over different times of the day due to spatiotemporal variability of human distribution. Inequality in exposure is correlated with low greenspace provision, which may result from factors such as dry cold climate and urbanization patterns.

Objective and perceived built environment, sense of community, and mental wellbeing in older adults in Hong Kong: A multilevel structural equation study

Yingqi Guo et al.

Summary: The study findings suggest that perceived built environment and sense of community influence the relationship between residential density and subjective wellbeing, while a U-shaped relationship was found between street connectivity and mental health. Park-based green space and land use mix have positive effects on mental health and subjective wellbeing, with vegetation-based green space negatively impacting subjective wellbeing.

Neighbourhood physical environment, intrinsic capacity, and 4-year late-life functional ability trajectories of low-income Chinese older population: A longitudinal study with the parallel process of latent growth curve modelling

Shiyu Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that both intrinsic capacity and functional ability declined significantly over time, with declines in intrinsic capacity leading to a faster decline in functional ability. Increased residential green space and the availability of facilities in the neighborhood were shown to help slow down the decline in functional ability over time.
