Tobacco heated products: a new challenge in tobacco control

Armando Peruga et al.

Summary: With declining cigarette sales, the tobacco industry is increasingly promoting heated tobacco products (HTP) as a replacement. However, concerns arise from reports erroneously suggesting that HTPs carry lower risks of cancer and other diseases compared to conventional cigarettes, citing the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a source. The FDA did authorize the sale of an HTP but denies endorsing the product or deeming it safe. Proper regulation is needed in Spain and the European Union to address HTPs, including compliance with smoking bans, advertising restrictions, standardized labeling, fragrance limitations, and equal taxation.
