Annual Research Review: The contributions of the RDoC research framework on understanding the neurodevelopmental origins, progression and treatment of mental illnesses

Jennifer Pacheco et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the NIMH's RDoC initiative as an alternate approach to categorizing mental illnesses based on dimensions of functioning. By analyzing the NIMH portfolio and recent work, it examines how RDoC has influenced developmental research. The study also looks at grant applications focusing on ADHD, childhood irritability, and ASD to illustrate the impact of RDoC on research.

Altered activation and functional connectivity in individuals with social anhedonia when envisioning positive future episodes

Zhuo-ya Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the neural correlates of envisioning positive future events in individuals with SocAnh, revealing reduced activation in the caudate and precuneus during prospection and increased functional connectivity between the caudate and inferior occipital gyrus. The findings suggest that altered cortico-striatal circuit may contribute to anticipatory pleasure deficits in individuals with SocAnh.

Neural substrates of reward anticipation and outcome in schizophrenia: a meta-analysis of fMRI findings in the monetary incentive delay task

Jianguang Zeng et al.

Summary: This study used a coordinate-based meta-analysis and the monetary incentive delay task to identify the brain regions involved in different reward phases in schizophrenia (SZ). The results showed hypoactivation in the striatum, anterior cingulate cortex, median cingulate cortex, amygdala, precentral gyrus, and superior temporal gyrus during anticipation, and hyperactivation in the striatum, insula, amygdala, hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, cerebellum, postcentral gyrus, and MCC during outcome. Hypoactivation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and medial prefrontal cortex was observed during outcome. The proportion of second-generation antipsychotic users was found to moderate the association between symptom severity and brain activity.

The Overlapping Neurobiology of Induced and Pathological Anxiety: A Meta-Analysis of Functional Neural Activation

Alice Chavanne et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis reveals a consistent pattern of activation across induced and pathological anxiety, suggesting some overlapping neurobiological mechanisms and indicating that induced anxiety could potentially serve as a model for certain anxiety disorders. However, it may be a more suitable model for some disorders than others.

Neurological Soft Signs Are Associated With Altered Cerebellar-Cerebral Functional Connectivity in Schizophrenia

Xin-Lu Cai et al.

Summary: The study revealed correlations between neurological soft signs (NSS) and cerebellar-cerebral resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in schizophrenia patients, suggesting a link with negative symptoms. The uncoupling of rsFC between the cerebellum and prefrontal regions may underlie the expression of NSS and provide a potential neural pathway for alleviating negative symptoms.

Relationship of ventral striatum activation during effort discounting to clinical amotivation severity in schizophrenia

Greer E. Prettyman et al.

Summary: Motivational deficits are central to disability in schizophrenia, with dysfunction of the ventral striatum (VS) impacting effort-based decision-making. Activation in the broader cortico-limbic network correlated with subjective value (SV) during the Effort Discounting Task (EDT). Reduced activation in the VS was associated with greater clinical amotivation severity in schizophrenia, indicating a dimensional relationship between VS hypofunction and motivation impairment.

The default mode network in cognition: a topographical perspective

Jonathan Smallwood et al.

Summary: The default mode network (DMN) consists of widely distributed brain regions in the parietal, temporal, and frontal cortex, showing reduced activity during attention-demanding tasks and increased activity during complex cognition tasks. DMN is located in regions furthest away from sensory and motor systems in the cortex. Leveraging knowledge of the topographic characteristics of DMN can enhance understanding of its contribution to cognition and behavior.
