Culturally Responsive Assessment of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Youth of Color

Sherry D. Molock et al.

Summary: The significance of youth suicide as a public health concern is highlighted by it being the second-leading cause of death for youth globally. There is a rise in suicide deaths and suicide-related occurrences in Black youth, while rates remain high among Native American/Indigenous youth. However, there is a lack of culturally tailored suicide risk assessment measures for youth from communities of color. This article aims to address this gap by examining the cultural relevancy of currently widely used suicide risk assessment instruments, research on suicide risk factors, and approaches to risk assessment for youth from communities of color.
