Internal Morphology Evolution of Mg Wire/Poly(Lactic Acid) Composites during Degradation Process Characterized by X-Ray Computed Tomography

Hong Cai et al.

Summary: The internal morphology evolution of Mg wire/PLA composites during degradation was investigated using XCT technology. Cracks were prone to appear near the outside location of the composites, and the sphericity of defects inside the composites significantly increased after 6 weeks immersion. The alkaline degradation products induced by magnesium degradation promoted the degradation of PLA and accelerated the loss of mechanical properties. The reasons for the inhomogeneity of degradation morphology were analyzed, and the relationship between the evolution of degradation morphology and the attenuation of mechanical properties was presented.

Short- and long-term corrosion behavior of carbonate apatite-coated Mg-4mass% Y-3mass% RE alloy in cell culture medium

Sachiko Hiromoto et al.

Summary: Osteoclast responsive carbonate apatite (CAp) coatings with different carbonate content rates and non-bioabsorbable hydroxyapatite (HAp) coating were formed on Mg-4mass% Y-3mass% rare earth (WE43) alloy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement revealed that the coating layer resistance of the CAp-coated specimens was higher than that of the HAp-coated specimen, both after 6 hours and during the initial 4 weeks.

Dual self-healing inorganic-organic hybrid coating on biomedical Mg

Qiangsheng Dong et al.

Summary: This study attempts to utilize the dual stimuli of magnesium corrosion by-products for self-healing coatings. By synthesizing DCPD/H(x)Phy hybrid coatings, the degradation of magnesium alloys is regulated through pH increase and Mg2+ ion enrichment, achieving anti-corrosion and self-healing properties.

Interaction of Mg Alloy with PLA Electrospun Nanofibers Coating in Understanding Changes of Corrosion, Wettability, and pH

Manuela Elena Voicu et al.

Summary: A modified biodegradable magnesium alloy with polylactic acid nanofibers was obtained using the electrospinning technique, and the presence of PLA nanofibers was confirmed through various characterization methods. The research indicates that the Mg alloy coated with PLA exhibits reduced hydrogen evolution and improved corrosion resistance, showing a shift towards hydrophobic character.
