Body weight and fat mass across the menopausal transition: hormonal modulators

Pierluigi Moccia et al.

Summary: The menopausal transition is associated with an increase in adiposity, particularly in the abdominal area, and a decrease in lean mass. Changes in energy expenditure and food intake also play a role, with the estrogen receptor alpha isoform being a key factor in fat accrual. Additional hormonal factors, including androgens and FSH, may also contribute to changes in body composition during menopause.

The Association Between Puberty Timing and Body Mass Index in a Longitudinal Setting: The Contribution of Genetic Factors

Karri Silventoinen et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the contribution of genetic factors to the association between puberty timing and body mass index (BMI) using longitudinal data and two approaches. The findings showed that early puberty is moderately associated with higher childhood BMI, but this association becomes weaker in adulthood and largely disappears after adjusting for childhood BMI. The study also found that the majority of these correlations are attributable to genetic factors.

A cross sectional survey of 504 women regarding perceived risk factors and barriers to follow healthy lifestyle and association with sociodemographic factors and menopausal symptoms

Sakshi Chopra et al.

Summary: This study investigates the risk factors of weight gain in midlife women, including menopausal symptom severity and lifestyle practices. The results show that the severity of menopausal symptoms is associated with dietary practices, joint pain with physical activity, and hot flashes/emotional volatility with sleep disturbances. Additionally, demographic factors such as education, economic status, and employment are related to unhealthy lifestyle practices.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a novel automated computer vision method, VBC, for estimating percentage total body fat using photos captured with a smartphone camera. The results showed that VBC was more accurate and had minimal bias compared to DXA, indicating great potential for widespread use in assessing body fat levels.

2022 American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO): Indications for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Dan Eisenberg et al.

Summary: Major updates to the 1991 National Institutes of Health guidelines for bariatric surgery recommend metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) >35 kg/m2 regardless of co-morbidities. It is also suggested that individuals with metabolic disease and a BMI of 30-34.9 kg/m2 should consider MBS. Furthermore, BMI thresholds should be adjusted for the Asian population, with a BMI >25 kg/m2 indicating clinical obesity, and MBS offered to individuals with a BMI >27.5 kg/m2. The long-term safety and efficacy of MBS have been consistently demonstrated, and selected children and adolescents may also be considered for MBS.

Energy Metabolism Changes and Dysregulated Lipid Metabolism in Postmenopausal Women

Seong-Hee Ko et al.

Summary: Hormonal changes during menopause in women lead to body composition changes, muscle loss, and abdominal obesity, with increased visceral fat as a result. These changes in fat distribution also contribute to metabolic abnormalities, insulin resistance, and metabolic diseases, due to enhanced lipolysis of visceral fat.

Preconceptional maternal weight loss and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Nicole Schenkelaars et al.

Summary: Preconceptional weight loss through lifestyle intervention or bariatric surgery is effective in reducing the risk of HDP, PIH, and PE in overweight and obese women, highlighting the importance of weight optimization for those with a desire to conceive. Further research is needed to examine both short-term and long-term beneficial and harmful effects of these interventions on maternal and offspring health.

Summary: Obesity is a multifactorial condition influenced by complex interactions among sex/gender, sociocultural, environmental, and physiological factors. More research on sex/gender is needed to investigate mechanisms underlying sex/gender differences in prevalence, comorbidities, and treatment, as well as to identify ways to increase men's interest and participation in obesity treatment, and examine differences in obesity prevalence and treatments for transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.

Summary: Disparities in genetic composition and fetal environment exist among Black and Hispanic pediatric patients, impacting their risk of obesity. Current treatment options for obesity are underutilized in communities of color due to limited access to care and cost. Increasing research efforts, especially in pharmacotherapy and metabolic and bariatric surgery, can help combat obesity in pediatric communities of color.
