An investigation on thermal runaway behaviour of a cylindrical lithium-ion battery under different states of charge based on thermal tests and a three-dimensional thermal runaway model

Tengfei He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the TR mechanism of a commercial Li[Ni5Co2Mn3]O-2/graphite 18650 type cylindrical battery with various SOCs using DSC tests and develops a 3D TR model to predict the battery's TR behaviors under different SOCs. The model fits well with the ARC test results and sheds light on the TR mechanism of different SOC batteries. The results show that the reaction onset temperature advances and the reaction enthalpy increases as the SOC increases. Cathode-anode and anode-electrolyte are the main heat generation sources during battery TR, and their proportion of heat generation decreases with the decrease of SOC.

Summary: This paper introduces an internal failure mechanism for triggering thermal runaway in a single (or multiple) 18650 cell(s) by modifying the cells with a mini-heater cartridge. The study shows that the modification procedures do not affect the cell performance and charge capacity, while the thermal runaway behavior and damage to the modified cells are representative of real-world cell failures. Additionally, the internally heated cells exhibit different venting behavior compared to externally heated cells, impacting mass loss profiles. The internal-heater failure approach is easily prepared with standard laboratory apparatus, producing repeatable failure results for single and multiple cell systems.
