Efficiency of gas collection systems at Danish landfills and implications for regulations

Zhenhan Duan et al.

Summary: Landfills are a significant source of anthropogenic methane emissions globally. This paper examines the gas collection efficiencies of 23 Danish landfills and proposes using these values to regulate methane emissions in Denmark. The study finds that the gas collection efficiency in Danish landfills is lower than in Swedish, UK and US landfills, potentially due to factors such as shallow gas collection pipes, leakage from installations, and low gas production. It suggests using gas collection efficiency as a regulatory tool to achieve methane mitigation goals in landfills.

Optimized design of a compost layer in a landfill biocover for CH4 oxidation

Monika Niemczyk et al.

Summary: This study optimized the mixture of compost materials for methane oxidation in a landfill biocover. The main factors that limited methane oxidation efficiency were high moisture content, exopolymeric substance formation, and fine texture of the materials.

Enhancement of CH4 oxidation potential in bio-based landfill cover materials

Monika Niemczyk et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of yard waste and leaf compost (YWLC) and biosolids compost (BSC) as bio-based landfill cover materials for oxidizing methane (CH4), finding that optimal results were achieved with mixing ratios of 1:1 and 1:4 between the two composts.

Validation and optimization of key biochar properties through iron modification for improving the methane oxidation capacity of landfill cover soil

Dandan Huang et al.

Summary: This study prepared biochars with distinctly varying characteristics through iron modification, which proved to be a promising approach to more efficiently improve the three key biochar properties, especially pore volume, and optimize biochar performance. The Fe-modified biochars encouraged a bacterial consortium in the soil, significantly enhancing the CH4 oxidation capacities by up to 26%-74% compared to pristine biochar.

Towards a Zero Waste city- an analysis from the perspective of energy recovery and landfill reduction in Beijing

Ruixi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes four different scenarios for Municipal Solid Waste treatment in Beijing, with scenario 4 (MBT system) ranking highest in reducing landfill amount, improving energy recovery efficiency, and reducing GHG emissions. Scenario 3 achieves the highest economic benefit. The continuous implementation of waste separation policy and waste-to-energy options in China are critical for establishing an efficient waste management system.

Factors impacting the performance and microbial populations of three biofilters for co-treatment of H2S and NH3 in a domestic waste landfill site

Tianlong Zheng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that biofilters can effectively remove H2S and NH3 in landfill sites, with high removal efficiencies. The microbial populations in biofilters are closely related to the degradation of H2S and NH3.

Life cycle analysis of potential municipal solid wastes management scenarios in Tanzania: the case of Arusha City

Edwin N. Richard et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of recycling, composting, and landfilling is the best option for municipal solid waste management in developing countries facing increasing concerns about climate change. Sensitivity analysis shows that improving diesel consumption, reducing methane emissions, and increasing paper and plastic recycling rates can reduce environmental impacts across all scenarios.
