Effect of fluoride complexation by aluminium ions on the corrosion behaviour of aluminium cathodes used in zinc electrowinning

J. A. Paula et al.

Summary: The presence of fluoride impurity at 20 mg/L in zinc sulfate electrolyte significantly increased the corrosion rate of Al-1050 and Al-1070 alloys used as cathodes in zinc electrowinning. The addition of Al3+ ions to the electrolyte reduced the corrosion rate by about 21% for Al-1050 alloy and about 28% for Al-1070 alloy. This effect was attributed to the formation of AlF2+ and AlF2+ complexes, which decreased the activity of fluoride. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy confirmed the increased corrosion resistance of Al alloys in the presence of Al3+. Scanning electron microscopy revealed uniform corrosion on the surface of Al, with the degree depending on fluoride concentration. The coarser microstructure of Al-1050 contributed to its higher corrosion resistance in a non-passivating media. The selection of effective complexing agent for fluoride and the subsequent reduction in the corrosion rate of aluminum cathodes are important in the context of increasing co-processing of secondary zinc sources.

Influence of fuel distribution on co-combustion of sludge and coal in a 660 MW tangentially fired boiler

Daining Wei et al.

Summary: This paper studied the influence of different fuel distribution methods on co-combustion of municipal sewage sludge and coal. The results showed that regardless of the fuel distribution method, co-combustion temperature in the main combustion region decreased compared to coal mono-combustion. When the fuel was premixed, the furnace temperature distribution was more uniform, but it had a greater influence on boiler heat flux. Feeding sludge into the furnace from the top layer of burners individually effectively reduced the adverse impact of premixed combustion.

Experimental and ReaxFF molecular dynamic study of NO emission during municipal sludge/coal co-combustion

Tong Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the emission of NO during the co-combustion of municipal sludge and Meihuajing bituminous coal was investigated. The results from both experiments and ReaxFF MD simulations showed a negative synergistic effect on NO emission, while a positive synergistic effect on N2 and NO2 emissions was observed. The contribution of MHJ to the MS-NO emission during co-combustion was significant, while MS had little impact on the MHJ-NO emission. These findings were attributed to the higher oxygen consumption of MHJ, resulting in increased OH radicals and nitrogen-containing compounds formation.

The quaternary fluoride LiNaCa2Al2F12 in aluminum electrolytes: synthesis, structure, thermal stability

Sergei D. Kirik et al.

Summary: The quaternary fluoride phase LiNaCa2Al2F12 was obtained by quenching a melt of simple fluorides at 850 degrees C. The phase was previously observed as an impurity in cooled aluminum samples. The crystal structure consists of mixed layers of calcium cations and octahedral [AlF6]3- anions, separated by flat nets of lithium and sodium cations. Thermal decomposition of LiNaCa2Al2F12 results in the formation of fluorite and aluminum oxides and aluminates. The presence of [AlF6]3- anions in acidic electrolyte melts facilitates the dissolution of alumina.

Summary: By studying the principle of ultrasonic-enhanced leaching and the mechanism of reductive acid leaching of valuable metals, a new method of ultrasonic-enhanced hydrazine sulfate leaching of Zn and Ge in zinc oxide dust in the sulfuric acid system has been proved to be very effective. The valence states of Fe and Ge in the leachate were successfully reduced to Fe2+ and Ge2+, leading to increased leaching efficiency and economic benefits. The leaching rate of Zn increased by 6%, and that of Ge increased by 11%.

Synthesis of high purity calcium fluoride from fluoride-containing wastewater

Shaowei You et al.

Summary: This study presents a new process for recovering high purity calcium fluoride from wastewater. A column reactor system with calcium sulfate dihydrate as reaction medium was used, resulting in the successful production of calcium fluoride with purity exceeding 99% and reducing fluoride concentration in wastewater to less than 10 mg/L. The process effectively removes fluoride while recovering high-purity calcium fluoride and various parameters such as initial fluoride concentration, flow rate, pH, and time significantly influence fluoride removal efficiency. The study offers an effective strategy for resource utilization and standard discharge of fluorine-containing wastewater.

Optimizing the recovery process of ceramic grade calcium fluoride from hydrofluoric/hexafluorosilicic acid wastewater

Quynh Thi Phuong Tran et al.

Summary: Chemical precipitation using calcium salts is commonly used in treating hydrofluoric acid wastewater due to its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. In this study, an environmentally friendly approach was developed to treat concentrated hydrofluoric/hexafluorosilicic acid wastewater and recover high purity CaF2 while reducing waste disposal. The effects of calcium-to-fluoride molar ratio, silicon concentration, and polymer dosage on the purity of recovered CaF2 were investigated and optimized. The results showed that the ceramic grade CaF2 with a purity of 85.6-87.9% was achieved under the optimum conditions. The method proposed in this study provides a new insight into CaF2 purification.

Removal characteristics of particulate matters and hazardous trace elements in a 660 MW ultra-low emission coal-fired power plant

Cong Chen et al.

Summary: Coal is the primary energy source in China, but the emissions from coal-fired power plants have caused severe environmental problems. In recent years, China has implemented strict regulations to limit air pollutant emissions from these plants. A field sampling test of a 660 MW ultra-low emission coal-fired power plant showed that electrostatic precipitators and wet electrostatic precipitators had high mass removal efficiency for particulate matters, primarily PM2.5. Additionally, analysis of trace elements showed that manganese content was independent of particle size, while chromium, arsenic, and lead were mainly enriched in fine ash particles.
