Mapping heterogenous anisotropic tissue mechanical properties with transverse isotropic nonlinear inversion MR elastography

Matthew McGarry et al.

Summary: This paper presents a model-based transverse isotropic implementation for non-linear inversion (TI-NLI) that accurately reconstructs shear modulus, damping ratio, shear anisotropy, and tensile anisotropy in in vivo brain tissue. The accuracy and repeatability of TI-NLI were validated using synthetic and real data, demonstrating its potential for clinical research on anisotropic tissues such as the brain and muscle.

Quantifying stability of parameter estimates for in vivo nearly incompressible transversely-isotropic brain MR elastography

Dhrubo Jyoti et al.

Summary: In this study, a new data quality metric for magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) was developed based on a generalized calculation method. The metric can quickly and reliably predict the accuracy of material property reconstructions and shows promise for point-of-care evaluation of data quality.

A heterogenous, time harmonic, nearly incompressible transverse isotropic finite element brain simulation platform for MR elastography

Matthew McGarry et al.

Summary: In this study, a numerical implementation of a NITI FE model for MR elastography of fibrous soft tissue was described, with heterogeneity and anisotropy accounted for. Simulation results showed that the NLI algorithm performed well in simple isotropic cases, while LDI exhibited significant artifacts due to violation of local homogeneity assumptions. Additionally, isotropic NLI inversion of anisotropic data produced undesirable wavefield-dependent mechanical property maps.

Visco- and poroelastic contributions of the zona pellucida to the mechanical response of oocytes

Alberto Stracuzzi et al.

Summary: By conducting experiments and numerical simulations, this study provides novel insights into probing the mechanical properties of oocytes, revealing that the structural response of the zona pellucida involves fluid transport and mechanical properties of glycoproteins, which can be separated into two distinct timescales.

Micro-elastography: Toward ultrasonic shear waves in soft solids

G. Laloy-Borgna et al.

Summary: Through phantom experiments, ultrasonic shear waves at 20.4kHz were observed, and it was found that the Kelvin-Voigt model can predict a frequency upper bound. According to this model, the maximum error of elasticity estimation when viscosity is neglected is 40%.

Distinct classes of lagging chromosome underpin age-related oocyte aneuploidy in mouse

Aleksandar I. Mihajlovic et al.

Summary: This study reveals two mechanistically distinct classes of chromosome motion in lagging chromosomes in mouse oocytes, with class-I laggards being more likely to lead to aneuploidy while class-II laggards are relatively benign. Controlled prolongation of meiosis I can reduce class-I lagging, thus preventing aneuploidy formation. Manipulating the cell cycle could potentially increase the yield of useful oocytes in some contexts.

Magnetic Resonance Elastography Reconstruction for Anisotropic Tissues

Behzad Babaei et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a new elastography reconstruction technique for estimating the linear viscoelastic mechanical properties of transversely isotropic soft tissues. The method performed well in both in silico phantom experiments and ex vivo muscle tests, outperforming the previous method in the presence of noise.
