Identifying the latent space geometry of network models through analysis of curvature

Summary: A common method for modelling networks assigns each node to a low-dimensional manifold where distance inversely correlates with connection likelihood. Positive manifold curvature promotes tighter communities, while negative curvature induces repulsion. This study estimates manifold type, dimension, and curvature utilizing simply connected, complete Riemannian manifolds of constant curvature. The authors represent the graph as a noisy distance matrix based on clique connections and develop hypothesis tests to assess isometric embeddability in candidate geometries. The approach is applied to datasets from economics and neuroscience.
