Salmon lice loads on Atlantic salmon smolts associated with reduced welfare and increased population mortalities

Stephen C. Ives et al.

Summary: Modeling the potential impacts of salmon lice on Atlantic salmon requires estimation of sub-lethal effects and direct mortality thresholds. Laboratory experiments were analyzed to determine the lower threshold (T1), which indicates the level of lice loads causing sub-lethal effects, and the upper threshold (T2), which represents the lice load causing direct mortality. T1 is approximately 0.08 lice g-1 of host, while T2 is approximately 0.24 lice g-1 with a 95% confidence interval between 0.1 and 0.67 lice g-1. These thresholds provide valuable information for the management of lice concentrations and further support existing mortality-based lice thresholds.

Salmon lice-induced mortality of Atlantic salmon during post-smolt migration in Norway

Ingrid A. Johnsen et al.

Summary: This study focused on the environmental challenges of salmonid aquaculture, estimating the impact of salmon lice on wild salmon mortality in Norwegian waters using models and data analysis. Results showed that aquaculture-produced salmon lice led to varying mortality rates of wild salmon post-smolts in different rivers.

A simple modelling tool for assessing interaction with host and local infestation of sea lice from salmonid farms on wild salmonids based on processes operating at multiple scales in space and time

Alexander G. Murray et al.

Summary: Sea lice are a significant issue in salmon aquaculture, with impacts depending on factors such as oviposition, larval concentration, and infestation rates. Modeling the fine-scale processes of sea lice infestation is important for understanding and managing the risks associated with aquaculture.

Validating a biophysical parasite model with fish farm pen and plankton trawl data

Thomas P. Adams et al.

Summary: Biophysical models of parasite dispersal are increasingly used in marine aquaculture developments to plan strategies, but the ability of these models to reflect reality is often questioned. Validation is difficult due to challenges in verifying outputs, particularly in relation to larval population distribution and infection sources.

Combining acoustic tracking and hydrodynamic modelling to study migratory behaviour of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts on entry into high-energy coastal waters

J. Mcilvenny et al.

Summary: The migration of Atlantic salmon smolts from fresh water to the marine environment is a crucial transitional stage in their development. This study used acoustic tracking, instrument data, and hydrodynamic modelling to examine the behavior of juvenile salmon during this transition, finding that migration timing is linked to low-light conditions and tidal currents play a significant role in their movement patterns.

A statistical mechanistic approach including temperature and salinity effects to improve salmon lice modelling of infestation pressure

Leif Christian Stige et al.

Summary: By updating the salmon lice infestation model based on new insights, researchers found that salinity has the largest impact on infestation rates, while temperature and a potential temperature-salinity interaction effect may also play a role.

A preliminary assessment of indirect impacts on aquaculture species health and welfare in Scotland during COVID-19 lockdown

Alexander G. Murray et al.

Summary: The impact of COVID-19 on animal health and welfare in Scottish aquaculture appears limited, with no evidence of significant effects on salmon health and welfare during the intensive lockdown period. However, potential longer-term effects are still uncertain and the study did not assess impacts on the economic or social aspects of aquaculture production.

Farmed salmonids drive the abundance, ecology and evolution of parasitic salmon lice in Norway

T. Dempster et al.

Summary: Sea cage fish farming poses risks for disease transmission between farmed and wild hosts, with salmon louse infestations causing production losses and affecting wild fish populations. The expansion of the industry has led to farmed salmonids becoming increasingly dominant in Norwegian coastal waters, significantly impacting the abundance of salmon lice.
