Hydration superposition effect and mechanism of steel slag powder and granulated blast furnace slag powder

Jihui Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction law of steel slag and granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) in terms of ion dissolution, hydration heat, hydration products, hydration degree, microstructure, and mechanical properties was revealed. The results showed that the combination of steel slag and GBFS had a significant hydration superposition effect, resulting in higher strength in the paste. The mechanical properties were the best when the steel slag-to-GBFS ratio was 1:1 and 2:3 at 7 days and 28 days, respectively. The microstructure of hydration products consisted of fiber-like and particle-like C-S-H gels, contributing to good hardening properties.

Utilization of off-specification fly ash in preparing ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC): Mixture design, characterization, and life-cycle assessment

Jiang Du et al.

Summary: This paper presents the feasibility and benefits of using off-specification fly ash (OSFA) in preparing ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The experimental results showed that UHPC with the proper combination of OSFA and slag achieved the desired compressive and flexural strengths and had low autogenous shrinkage and leachability of heavy metals. Various methods were used to investigate the underlying mechanisms of property development. Economic and environmental analysis demonstrated that using OSFA significantly reduced the life-cycle cost, carbon footprint, and energy consumption of UHPC. This study provides a new avenue for the valorization of OSFA and the development of cost-effective and eco-friendly UHPC.

A review of recycled aggregate concrete modified by nanosilica and graphene oxide: Materials, performances and mechanism

Peimin Zhan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of nano-materials in recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) to offset its shortcomings. It discusses the physiochemical properties and dispersibility of nanosilica and graphene oxide, and reviews the effects of these nano-materials on the workability, mechanical properties, durability, and dimensional stability of RAC. The inclusion of nano-materials generally improves the mechanical properties and durability of RAC but may reduce its workability. The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is a key focus in micro-structural studies. However, controversies exist regarding the modification effects of nano-materials, which depend on their types, dosages, and modification approaches.

Effect of partial replacement of the cement by glass waste on cementitious pastes

Lidiane Fernanda Jochem et al.

Summary: The utilization of ground glass waste as supplementary cementitious material is beneficial for the environment and sometimes economically advantageous as it converts waste into value-added products and reduces the need for transportation. The research found that incorporating ground glass waste can enhance air entrapped, reduce cement consumption, improve cement efficiency in hydration kinetics, and induce a pozzolanic reaction. However, it did not improve mechanical strength in a hardened state but showed higher efficiency in cement replacement.

Influence of steel fiber on compressive properties of ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete

Jian Yang et al.

Summary: The compressive properties of UHPFRC are greatly affected by the volume fraction and aspect ratio of steel fiber. Steel fiber can enhance the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of UHPFRC, but it also reduces its flowability, leading to increased porosity and pore size in the hardened material. A prediction model and empirical formulas for compressive strength and modulus of elasticity were proposed and verified through experimental data analysis. A relationship formula between modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of UHPFRC was also established and validated through a global database of tests.

Summary: Substitution of metakaolin with slag increased precursor reactivity, leading to higher reaction rates and improved mechanical properties and sulfate resistance in alkaliactivated cement. The development of gel phases and pore structures, as well as the generation of C-A-S-H, contribute to the better sulfate resistance and more compact microstructure observed with higher slag content. An optimal replacement level of 30 wt% metakaolin was identified for improved sulfate resistance and prevention of potential ettringite damage in practical applications.

A comprehensive review on performance of cementitious and geopolymeric concretes with recycled waste glass as powder, sand or cullet

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: Recycling waste glass for developing cementitious and geopolymeric concretes as sustainable construction materials is gaining more attention in the construction industry. The durability performance of concrete with waste glass is affected by factors such as the type, size, and replacement ratio of waste glass, as well as other factors like mineral additives, mixing, and curing methods. Fine glass powder can improve long-term durability by enhancing pozzolanic reactivity and reducing ASR expansion.
