Thermal-hydraulic and particle deposition analysis of supercritical CO2 in different tubes

Shang Mao et al.

Summary: The thermal-hydraulic and particle deposition characteristics of supercritical CO2 (SCO2) in different tubes were numerically investigated. It was found that the semi-circular tube exhibited the best heat transfer performance and could effectively alleviate the buoyancy effect. The corners of the semi-circular and square tubes should be further optimized to prevent excessive temperatures. The particle deposition efficiency varied with particle size, mass flux, and heat flux, indicating that flow channels should be further optimized for heat exchangers using SCO2 as working fluid.

Experimental investigation of temperature and hydrodynamics on CaCO3 fouling during convective heat transfer and subcooled flow boiling

Sadaf Rahimi et al.

Summary: Deposit formation in heat exchangers is an undesirable process that can reduce their performance and efficiency. This research investigated the impact of fluid bulk temperature (Tb) on the deposition of CaCO3 solution under convective heat transfer and subcooled flow boiling conditions. The study found that Tb significantly influenced the mechanism of deposit formation, changing the fouling resistance curve and crystal type of the deposit layer. The results also showed that heat flux and fluid flow rate had different effects on fouling rate depending on Tb and heat flux levels.

Experimental study on fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field on the CaCO3 fouling of a heat transfer surface

Yandong Liang et al.

Summary: Forced convective heat transfer and CaCO3 deposition experiments were conducted to investigate the fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field effectively inhibited the CaCO3 fouling deposition and decreased the growth rate of fouling. It also reduced the conductivity of the test fluid and promoted the crystallization of CaCO3 in aragonite, resulting in easily removable soft fouling. An evaluation model was proposed to better define the fouling inhibition effect of the variable frequency electromagnetic field.

Numerical investigation on flow and thermal performance of supercritical CO2 in a horizontal ribbed tube

Shang Mao et al.

Summary: The thermal performance of supercritical carbon dioxide in horizontal ribbed tubes has been investigated through numerical simulation. Three types of ribs were studied to understand their effects on heat transfer. The results show that the triangular ribbed tubes can significantly enhance the heat transfer coefficient and reduce wall temperature. However, circular ribbed tubes demonstrate the best performance from the viewpoint of performance evaluation criteria. Moreover, the rib configuration promotes the transition of the flow field, leading to improved heat transfer. Finally, small rib size and medium pitch further enhance the turbulent heat transfer of supercritical CO2.

Predicting heat transfer and flow features of supercritical CO2 in printed circuit heat exchangers with novel wavy minichannels

Morteza Khoshvaght-Aliabadi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of non-uniform wavy minichannels using supercritical carbon dioxide as the working fluid. The results show that the proposed structures for the wavy minichannels can increase the heat transfer coefficient under the given operating conditions. Replacing the conventional wavy minichannel with shorter wavelengths at the upstream significantly enhances the heat transfer in both cooling and heating modes.

Summary: The study suggests that choosing smaller design point values for CO2 channel mass flow rates can significantly reduce pressure losses, but may result in undesirable temperature profiles; higher channel mass flow rates can avoid pinch points in the precooler, but lead to compact designs with poor hydraulic performance; using a sandwiched channel configuration can substantially improve the hydraulic performance of the cold side without affecting the thermal characteristics of the precooler.
