Configuration of biodegradable equilibrium modified atmosphere packages, including a moisture absorber for fresh cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana L.) fruits

Johanna Garavito et al.

Summary: Different equilibrium modified atmosphere packaging systems were evaluated for cape gooseberry fruits, with PLA trays with a cellulose film showing the longest shelf life. The higher permeability to water vapor of PLA prevented condensation and dehydration better compared to cellulose trays.

A Meta-study of the Permeance of Perforated Packaging Films to Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide

J. C. Oliveira et al.

Summary: This review provides a unified assessment of the impact of perforation profile on the package permeance, showing that decreasing the diameter of the perforations significantly increases the effective permeance of the package. The concentration gradient across the package also has relevance to the permeance. The use of a dimensionless correlation for convection coefficients from flat planes is suggested as an efficient analysis to estimate gas permeance and design packages.

Microperforated Compostable Packaging Extends Shelf Life of Ethylene-Treated Banana Fruit

Victor Rodov et al.

Summary: This study compared compostable biodegradable polyester packaging with commercially available petroleum-based plastic alternatives for ethylene-treated bananas. The results showed that non-perforated compostable packaging caused hypoxic fermentation, while micro-perforation prevented fermentation. The biodegradable packages had higher water vapor permeability compared to conventional plastics but lower fruit weight loss than in open containers.

Developing an Arduino-based control system for temperature-dependent gas modification in a fruit storage container

Ali Jalali et al.

Summary: Temperature is the most crucial factor affecting the quality and shelf life of fresh produce. This study developed a system to actively control CO2 and O2 concentrations inside a storage container under varying temperatures. The system used a mini air blower and a thin and long tube to facilitate gas exchange, and an Arduino microcontroller to control the blower based on real-time temperature measurements. The system successfully controlled the CO2 concentration at the desired level for both constant and changing temperatures.

Combined modified atmosphere packaging and guar gum edible coatings to preserve blackberry (Rubus glaucusBenth)

Diego A. Perez et al.

Summary: Blackberry fruits have a limited shelf life of 3-6 days and exploring preservation methods is important for their market viability. This study examined the effects of modified atmosphere packaging and edible coatings on blackberries. The combination of sealed polyethylene terephthalate clamshells with polylactic acid and guar gum edible coating showed potential for extended shelf life with minimal weight loss, offering commercial promise.

Benefit of modified atmosphere packaging on the overall environmental impact of packed strawberries

Celine Matar et al.

Summary: The study concluded that for highly perishable products, the production step has the most significant environmental impact. While well optimized EMAP systems can be valuable alternatives to conventional packaging for short-term storage, they cannot fully substitute for refrigeration over a longer period. Sensitivity analysis also showed that the best packaging strategy is highly dependent on food loss parameters in the supply chain.

Challenges and new opportunities on barrier performance of biodegradable polymers for sustainable packaging

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: Biodegradable polymers have attracted significant attention due to their environmentally friendly compostability. However, challenges remain for their practical application in packaging, particularly in addressing gas/moisture barrier issues. Various strategies have been researched for decades to overcome these challenges, such as chain architecture tailoring, crystallinity, melt blending/multi-layer co-extrusion, nanotechnology, and surface coating. This review focuses on improving the oxygen/water vapor barrier properties of biodegradable polymers and discusses the limitations of current methods and potential solutions.
