Change in key mechanical properties from postprocess hot pressing of commercial wood-plastic composites with different fibre contents

Daniel Friedrich

Summary: Wood-plastic composites with high wood fiber content and reduced dependence on mineral oil offer new design options for three-dimensional facades. This study investigates the effects of postprocess hot pressing on the mechanical properties of WPCs and finds that heating time and temperature have an impact on flexural strength and stiffness modulus.

Robust microhoneycomb-like nanofibrous aerogels derived from cellulose and lignin as highly efficient, low-resistant and anti-clogging air filters

Xiu Yun Daphne Ma et al.

Summary: This article presents a new strategy to prepare durable microhoneycomb-like nanofibrous aerogels for high-performance air filters, exhibiting excellent filtration performance and mechanical robustness. The results show a high filtration efficiency and anti-clogging features, making them a promising solution to mitigate the tradeoff between filtration efficiency and pressure drop, as well as reducing potential microplastic pollution from petroleum-based plastic filters.

Facile fabrication of multiscale ZnO/cellulose composite membrane towards enhancing photocatalytic and mechanical properties

Xin Li et al.

Summary: Multiscale fibers were used to improve the photocatalytic and recycling properties of ZnO/cellulose composites. The ZnO flower/sheet ratio could be adjusted by the multiscale cellulose fibers, with an increasing nano-/micro- ratio leading to an increase in the ZnO flower/sheet ratio. The composite membrane with the highest ZnO flower/sheet ratio exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, while the composite membrane with a reasonable nano-/micro- ratio showed excellent wet strength.

Nanocellulose-based membrane as a potential material for high performance biodegradable aerosol respirators for SARS-CoV-2 prevention: a review

Tido Tiwa Stanislas et al.

Summary: The controversy over COVID-19 transmission in 2020 has highlighted the importance of understanding airborne transmission routes of respiratory viruses. This has led to a high demand for face masks, with nanocellulose-based membranes emerging as a promising environmental solution for aerosol filtration due to their biodegradability, renewability, and other desirable characteristics. Future research trends in this area aim at improving air filter media by enhancing the membrane structure and tailoring pore sizes for better filtration.

Impact of calcium-carboxylate interactions in cellulose nanofiber reinforced alginate based film with triple-decker-like structure

Jing Xiao et al.

Summary: Biofilm with compact structure was assembled using layer-by-layer casting technology, incorporating ALG and TOCN in a triple-deckerlike structure. After Ca2+ crosslinking, the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the film were significantly enhanced, with improved hydrogen and ionic interactions. The resulting crosslinked film showed increased insolubility, mechanical strength and reduced water vapor permeability, extending the potential applications of polysaccharides in various fields, especially in food packaging.

3D printing of a bio-based ink made of cross-linked cellulose nanofibrils with various metal cations

J. Benedikt Mietner et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were cross-linked with different metallic cations to produce hydrogel inks suitable for 3D printing. Only hydrogel inks containing Ca2+ and Mg2+ were found to be suitable for 3D printing. The interaction between TOCNFs and divalent metal cations was shown to have an impact on printability and viscoelastic properties of the inks.
