Exploiting graphene oxide as a potential additive to improve the performance of cold-mixed epoxy asphalt binder

Jingjing Si et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of graphene oxide (GO) as an additive for preparing GO/CEA composites. The influences of GO on the structure and performances of CEA were investigated. Results showed that GO improved the compatibility of epoxy resin and asphalt, enhanced the heat resistance and toughness of the cured CEA, but slightly weakened its strength. The introduction of GO lowered the glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the cured CEA.

The Effect of Silica Particle Size on the Mechanical Enhancement of Polymer Nanocomposites

Evagelia Kontou et al.

Summary: SiO(2) micro/nanocomposites based on poly-lactic acid (PLA) and an epoxy resin were prepared and studied experimentally. The mechanical and thermomechanical performance of the composites was analyzed using dynamic mechanical analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Finite element analysis (FEA) and comparison with analytical models were also carried out. The results showed that the nanosized particles exhibited higher reinforcement, especially in resin-based nanocomposites.

Thermomechanical performance of biodegradable poly (lactic acid)/carbonaceous hybrid nanocomposites: Comparative study

Ilias Charitos et al.

Summary: In this study, hybrid nanocomposites based on polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and mixtures of graphene oxide (GO) with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were prepared and analyzed. The experimental data support the presence of a synergistic effect in the PLA/GO/CNT nanocomposites, leading to enhanced mechanical properties, crystallinity, and conductivity within the bulk matrix.

The absolute heat capacity of polymer grafted nanoparticles using fast scanning calorimetry

Nazam Sakib et al.

Summary: The absolute heat capacity of a matrix-free polystyrene grafted silica nanocomposite system was investigated using Flash DSC and compared to a neat polystyrene sample. The results showed that the heat capacity of the polymer in the nanocomposite was 8% lower than that of the neat polystyrene, and there was a 15% lower change in heat capacity at the glass transition temperature. Moreover, there was a 2 nm-thick immobile layer of polymer around the nanoparticles, and the glassy layer remained immobile up to 300 degrees C.

Effects of oil palm and montmorillonite nanofillers on stiffness and interfacial adhesion of kenaf/epoxy hybrid nanocomposites

Helmi Hammami et al.

Summary: The dielectric properties of bio-hybrid composites reinforced with OPEFB, MMT, and OMMT nanoclays were evaluated in terms of molecular mobility, interfacial adhesion, and fragility near the glass transition temperature. The addition of nanofillers affected the relaxations and dielectric strength, with different types of fillers leading to different behaviors in the composites. The nanofillers were found to improve the distribution and bonding between KF fibers and epoxy resin in the matrix.

Damping and mechanical properties of carbon nanotube solvent-free nanofluids-filled epoxy nanocomposites

Yudeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that nanofluids with excellent dispersity and weak interface strength can enhance both the damping and mechanical properties of epoxy composites. Adding 0.5 wt% MWNT to the epoxy resin matrix significantly improves the strength of the nanocomposites.

New contributions from thermal and dielectric techniques to the understanding of the dynamic properties of medium to long chain poly (propylene glycols)

Herminio P. Diogo et al.

Summary: The molecular mobility of poly(propylene glycols) with different molecular weights was studied, showing that the glass transition temperature tends towards a limit value, different types of molecular mobility were identified at different temperatures, and the dynamic fragility was found to be independent of molecular weight in the studied range.

The synergistic effect on the thermomechanical and electrical properties of carbonaceous hybrid polymer nanocomposites

Ilias Charitos et al.

Summary: The study showed that incorporating two different types of nanofillers into a polymeric matrix simultaneously can improve thermomechanical performance, with a synergistic effect observed especially between carbon nanotubes and graphene. This finding was further supported by BDS and Raman results, suggesting a new perspective for the potential of mLLDPE/hybrid nanocomposites in targeted applications.

Summary: The study investigated the dielectric and thermal characteristics of nanohybrid films based on poly(epsilon-caprolactone) with varying loadings of halloysite nanotubes. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy revealed the impact of the added HNT fillers on the molecular relaxation and interfacial polarization of PCL, recommending a weight ratio of 3% to 5% for optimal performance in various applications.
