Characterisation of Hemp Fibres Reinforced Composites Using Thermoplastic Polymers as Matrices

Lucia Stelea et al.

Summary: Composite materials with hemp fibers as reinforcing agents and different polymeric matrices were prepared by needle punching and heat pressing. The properties of the composites were analyzed with respect to the hemp/matrix ratio and the nature of the matrix. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the composites were affected by both the hemp/matrix ratio and the nature of the matrix, and the thermal stability of the composites decreased as the amount of hemp increased.

Improving Polypropylene Matrix Composites Reinforced with Aligned Hemp Fibre Mats Using High Fibre Contents

Tom Sunny et al.

Summary: The main goal of this study was to improve the mechanical performance of polypropylene (PP) matrix composites through high hemp fiber content. Decreasing the overall thickness of fiber mats within the stacking arrangements improved the fiber wetting and therefore enhanced the tensile properties. The strongest composite had a fiber content of about 60 wt% and showed significantly higher tensile strength and Young's modulus compared to the control samples.

Interfacial and mechanical characterisation of biodegradable polymer-flax fibre composites

Delphin Pantaloni et al.

Summary: The study suggests that replacing glass fibers with flax fibers in thermoset composite materials can reduce ecological impact, and using a biodegradable thermoplastic matrix enables recycling and composting. Investigating the interface between flax fibers and biodegradable matrices reveals that their mechanical properties may be comparable to or better than traditional benchmarks. The adhesion between fibers and matrices plays a significant role in the performance of biocomposites.
