UV laser high-quality drilling of CFRP plate with a new interlaced scanning mode

Wenyuan Li et al.

Summary: An interlaced scanning mode (ISM) is proposed to improve the surface quality of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) plate by reducing heat accumulation effect and surface defects compared to the default sequential scanning mode (SSM). Several experiments show that ISM can significantly reduce the overall average HAZ width and taper of the hole, leading to less damage in the HAZ and vicinity.

Picosecond laser ablation characteristics of satellite-used carbon fiber-reinforced composites

Mingyu Lu et al.

Summary: The characteristics of near-infrared picosecond laser ablation on graphitized carbon fiber-reinforced cyanate ester resin composites were studied, showing that the ablation threshold, morphology, and thickness of heat-affected zone can be controlled by adjusting processing parameters. Proper combination of scanning speed and incident fluence can result in well-defined grooves with clear edges and minimal heat-affected zones, indicating uniform removal of material's heterogeneous structure. Further optimization of processing parameters allowed for demonstrating the cutting of a large satellite-used carbon-fiber skin.
