Synergistic effect of polyurethane-coated carbon fiber and electron beam irradiation on the thermal/mechanical properties and long-term durability of polyamide-based thermoplastic composites

Soo-Yeon Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, polyamide 6 (PA)-based composites with polyurethane-coated carbon fiber (CF) as reinforcement filler and electron beam (EB) irradiation as efficient crosslinking process were investigated. The results show that increasing CF content and EB dose can significantly enhance the thermal stability and dynamic mechanical properties of the PA/CF composites.

Thermal and mechanical properties of flax char/carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 66 hybrid composites

Gorkem Degirmen Biricik et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that biochar can be used as a substituting reinforcing constituent for carbon fiber in polyamide 66 hybrid composites, and surface modification can enhance interfacial compatibility. The incorporation of modified carbon fiber and flax fiber char in composite materials can improve the ultimate tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composites.

Effects of functionalized graphene oxide modified sizing agent on the interfacial and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composites

Guangbin Cai et al.

Summary: By grafting functionalized graphene oxide onto carbon fiber, the interfacial and mechanical properties of carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 composites can be improved. The functionalized graphene oxide enhances interfacial compatibility and wettability, and retards crack propagation along the interface based on the reinforcement effect. The CF/PA6 composites treated with the modified sizing agent exhibit higher interfacial shear strength, interlaminar shear strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength.

Beom-Gon Cho et al.

Summary: The interfacial bonding of CF/PA 6 composites was enhanced through the application of a mixture of PA sizing agent and SRGO coating. The modified composites showed significant improvements in flexural strength, modulus, storage modulus, and absorbed impact energy compared to those without modification.

Carbon fiber versus glass fiber reinforcements: A novel, true comparison in thermoplastics

Philip F. Chu et al.

Summary: Carbon fiber and glass fiber are commonly used reinforcement materials in polymer composites, but their performance is not directly comparable due to differences in characteristics. By experimenting with chopped glass fibers to match the characteristics of carbon fibers, it opens up new possibilities for comparative studies between the two materials.

Yoldas Seki et al.

Summary: The study found that adding different proportions of carbon fiber and other materials can improve the tensile and flexural strength of polyamide 4.6. The composite material with 20% CF, 20% SG, and 3% G has the highest electrical conductivity of 4.01 S/cm, while the highest in-plane thermal conductivity is 20.43 W/mK and through-plane thermal conductivity is 4.19 W/mK in the material with 20% CF, 20% SG, and 5% G.

Improved interfacial shear strength of CF/PA6 and CF/epoxy composites by grafting graphene oxide onto carbon fiber surface with hyperbranched polyglycerol

Yingdan Zhu et al.

Summary: By grafting graphene oxide onto the carbon fiber surface, the interfacial properties and heat resistance of carbon fiber reinforced composites can be improved. The use of hyperbranched polyglycerol as a new coupling agent introduces a large number of hydroxyl groups to enhance the interfacial shear strength of composites.

Micro Scalable Graphene Oxide Productions Using Controlled Parameters in Bench Reactor

Carolina S. Andrade et al.

Summary: The study focused on synthesizing graphene oxide (GO) by changing the graphite/oxidizing reagents mass ratios (mG/mROxi), resulting in high quality GO nanosheets with good yield and process savings. The analysis showed that the major GO product consisted of nanosheets with 1-5 layers and lateral size up to 1.8 µm, indicating the potential for producing GO with desirable physicochemical characteristics.
