A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramizable phenolic resin and the thermal insulation properties of its fiber-reinforced composites

Yi Xin et al.

Summary: A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramicizable resin(BSZ-PR) was successfully fabricated by chemical reaction of boric acid, zirconium hydroxyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(Zr-POSS) and phenolic. The incorporation of boric acid and Zr-POSS improved the thermal stability of the resin effectively, and the flexural strength of carbon fiber/BSZ-PR and high silica fiber/BSZ-PR composites were increased significantly. Formation of ceramic structures such as SiO2, ZrO2 and SiC at high temperatures and extreme ablative conditions from BSZ-PR and its composites may be the key to the improved thermal, ablative properties.

Unique crack propagation of double network hydrogels under high stretch

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: Double network (DN) gels have significant resistance to crack initiation and propagation in highly stretched states. The crack growth velocity in DN gels exhibits a power-law relationship with the bulk energy release rate. Necking DN gels show a threshold behavior in which crack propagation transitions from slow to fast mode once the energy release rate exceeds a certain value.

Improving ablation resistant properties of epoxy-silicone rubber composites via boron catalyzed graphitization and ceramization

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, ablation resistant epoxy-silicone rubber composites were prepared, and the influence of boron on charring and ceramization process was systematically studied. After incorporating boron particles, the heat resistance and ablation resistance of the composite materials improved significantly, benefiting from the pore structure, strength, composition, and thermal conductivity of the ablation layers. The addition of 2.5wt% boron increased the maximum thermal decomposition temperature by 12.31%, and reduced the linear ablation rate and mass ablation rate by 34.86% and 36.11% respectively, compared to the control rubber composites. The catalytic mechanism suggests that the introduction of boron not only lowers the SiC generation temperature to promote ceramization but also compensates for carbon lattice defects to promote graphitization. This work is expected to provide new ideas and a theoretical basis for designing and preparing ablation resistant silicone-based composites.

Thermal insulation and char layer mechanical properties of a novel ethylene propylene diene monomer composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes coated via chemical vapour deposition

Kun Xi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a solution to the reduced thermal insulation performance caused by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in composite insulation materials, by pre-coating the CNTs with a carbon layer. The experimental results show that the coated-CNTs formulation significantly reduces thermal conductivity and improves the char layer strength of the insulation material. Overall, the coated-CNTs not only enhance the thermal insulation performance by reducing thermal conductivity, but also improve particle erosion resistance by strengthening the char layer.

Summary: The reaction between poly(hydromethylsiloxane-co-methylphenylsiloxane) and zirconium (IV) n-propoxide in dry toluene results in the formation of a siloxane-zirconium composite. The post-reaction solution containing heterosiloxane oligomers is stable under anhydrous conditions, but exposure to moisture leads to cross-linking and the formation of thin films with excellent light transparency and increased refractive index. The coatings are characterized using ellipsometry, UV-Vis, IR, and Si-29 MAS NMR spectroscopies.

Ablation Response Behavior under Different Heat Flux Environments for Liquid Silicone Rubber Composites

Liwei Yan et al.

Summary: Liquid silicone rubber-based composites were used to investigate the response behavior of ablative materials under different hyperthermal environments. Computational fluid dynamics simulation showed that oxyacetylene flames have similar temperature distributions with different heat fluxes, but gas flow scouring force increases significantly with increasing heat flux. The ablation performance decreases with higher heat flux, mainly due to the hybrid coupling between mechanical denudation and oxidative erosion.
