Inter and intra molecular dynamics in poly(trimethylene 2,5-furanoate) as revealed by infrared and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopies

Oscar G. Galvez et al.

Summary: Infrared spectroscopy and Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy were used to study the dynamic characteristics of poly(trimethylene 2,5-furanoate) (PTF) and poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) below their glass transition temperatures. The results showed that PTT exhibited a multimodal beta relaxation, while PTF showed a monomodal one. The absorption bands in the infrared spectra showed small shifts in wavenumbers for both polymers, except for the band related to the stretching mode of the carbonyl group. The bands associated with -C--O stretching had different shapes, suggesting the presence of hydrogen bonds in PTF. Density Functional Theory calculations supported the experimental results, indicating an increase in the syn conformations of the 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) moiety with temperature in the amorphous state of PTF.

Rationalizing the interfacial layer in polymer nanocomposites: Correlation between enthalpy and dielectric relaxation

Ran Xiao et al.

Summary: The accurate characterization of the interfacial layer is essential for understanding the structure-property relationship in polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). In this study, enthalpy relaxation and interfacial layer properties of model PNCs with attractive interactions were investigated using temperature-modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). Enthalpy relaxation accurately quantified the volume fraction of the interfacial layer, which was consistent with the results from BDS. The parameter (chiint) related to the contribution of the interfacial layer showed similar dependence on nanoparticle loading as the volume fraction estimated from TMDSC. This correlation between enthalpy and dielectric relaxation provides a new approach to characterize the interfacial layer properties and understand the impact on the glass transition behavior in PNCs.

Bio-based aliphatic/aromatic poly(trimethylene furanoate/sebacate) random copolymers: Correlation between mechanical, gas barrier performances and compostability and copolymer composition

Agata Zubkiewicz et al.

Summary: Highly promising fully biobased random copolyesters were synthesized through eco-friendly polycondensation in the melt using bio-derived 1,3-propanediol, dimethyl ester of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid, and sebacic acid. The copolymers showed improved flexibility and outstanding gas barrier properties with the addition of PTSeb co-units, and low amounts of PTSeb significantly modified the thermal, mechanical, and barrier properties of the copolymers, making them compostable materials.

Bulk Enthalpy of Melting of Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) Determined by Fast Scanning Chip Calorimetry

Katalee Jariyavidyanont et al.

Summary: The bulk enthalpy of melting of α-crystals of poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) was evaluated using fast scanning calorimetry (FSC). The results showed that the melting enthalpy of PLLA was 104.5 +/- 6 J g(-1) when melting occurs at 180-200 degrees C, with the analysis based on a two-phase structure and the absence of a vitrified rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). It was also confirmed that the RAF formation and vitrification were suppressed by controlling the crystallization process and using FSC for cooling.

Summary: In this study, the effects of molecular weight on the crystallization and molecular dynamics of poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) were investigated. Lower molecular weight samples exhibited greater influence on crystallization, while higher molecular weight samples were dominated by chain-chain entanglements and affected crystal structure formation. The findings are important for tuning the properties of PCL in various applications, particularly in the biomedical and packaging fields.

Thermal transitions, interfacial interactions, and molecular mobility in nanocomposites based on poly(l,d-lactic acid) and fumed silica nanoparticles

Panagiotis A. Klonos et al.

Summary: This study investigates the direct and indirect effects of silica nanoparticles on the molecular mobility and crystallization of polymer nanocomposites based on polylactide. The introduction of nanoparticles results in the formation of interfacial interactions and a moderate increase in the glass transition temperature. Crystallinity is suppressed and more active nuclei are observed in the nanocomposites. The slower diffusion of chains related to the nanoparticle-polymer interaction leads to slower crystal growth around more polymer nuclei in the nanocomposites. Local dynamics are affected by the suppression of interfacial interactions and sensitivity to large scale phase changes.

Effect of Micro- and Nano-Lignin on the Thermal, Mechanical, and Antioxidant Properties of Biobased PLA-Lignin Composite Films

Sofia P. Makri et al.

Summary: Bio-based poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composite films filled with unmodified soda lignin as a green filler were found to improve the physicochemical and mechanical properties of the films. The addition of lignin facilitated crystallization and led to a denser crystal structure in the composites. The films also showed improved tensile strength, Young's modulus, UV-blocking, and antioxidant properties. The finer dispersion of nano-lignin in the PLA matrix resulted in better performance compared to lignin. These findings suggest that PLA composite films filled with lignin or nano-lignin could be competitive and environmentally friendly alternatives in the food packaging industry.

Do poly(lactic acid) microplastics instigate a threat? A perception for their dynamic towards environmental pollution and toxicity

Nina Maria Ainali et al.

Summary: Concerns about the environmental fate and persistence of microplastics (MPs) are growing globally, especially in the context of bioplastics replacing petro-derived plastics. Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is a pioneering bioplastic with multifunctional properties, but its degradation and behavior in the environment are not well understood. Research on the sorption capacities and toxicity of PLA MPs is limited, and future trends and gaps in knowledge need to be addressed.

Revisiting Non-Conventional Crystallinity-Induced Effects on Molecular Mobility in Sustainable Diblock Copolymers of Poly(propylene adipate) and Polylactide

Panagiotis A. Klonos et al.

Summary: This work investigates the molecular mobility in renewable block copolymers and the non-trivial effects resulting from crystallization. Various tests were conducted to evaluate the overall thermal behavior, semicrystalline morphology, and molecular mobility under different thermal treatments. The results show that crystallization leads to increased molecular dynamics and suppressed cooperativity, and the impact is stronger in the cold-crystallization process compared to the melt-crystallization process.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal transitions, crystallization, and molecular mobility of a series of sustainable polymeric blends based on poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(ethylene adipate) (PEAd). The addition of PEAd to PLA enhances the plasticization of PLA chains and facilitates the nucleation of PLA, leading to strong cold crystallization. The blends also exhibit partially miscible polymers and systematic alternation in both local dynamics and dielectric strength. These PLA/PEAd blends have the potential to be used as phase change materials for tuning material performance.

Synthesis, Crystallization, Structure Memory Effects, and Molecular Dynamics of Biobased and Renewable Poly(n-alkylene succinate)s with n from 2 to 10

Panagiotis A. Klonos et al.

Summary: In this study, five poly(n-alkylene succinate)s were synthesized via multi-step polycondensation methods and investigated from the perspectives of structure, crystallinity, and molecular mobility. Lower n values were found to result in stronger structure/crystal memory and higher crystalline fraction, while the polymer chain length directly affected the nucleation rate. The molecular dynamics mapping of these polyesters revealed accelerated segmental dynamics with increasing n and reduced cooperativity, with spatial confinement imposed on the amorphous polymer by distributed crystallites as n increased. These findings suggest potential for tuning final polymer properties related to crystallization for future biomedical, packaging, and other applications.
