Routinely measuring symptom burden and health-related quality of life in dialysis patients: first results from the Dutch registry of patient-reported outcome measures

Esmee M. van der Willik et al.

Summary: The study describes the first experience with PROMS in Dutch routine dialysis care, showing low average response rates with high variability among centers. Dialysis patients experienced a high symptom burden and poor HRQoL. Using PROMS at the individual patient level may improve patient-professional communication and shared decision making.

Nurses' Experiences When Introducing Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in an Outpatient Clinic An Interpretive Description Study

Stine Thestrup Hansen et al.

Summary: The analysis of nurses' experiences with PROMs revealed that their usage is limited by institutional conditions. Nurses believe that PROMs have the potential to support clinical practice but also highlight needs within supportive care. The introduction of PROMs alone does not necessarily activate their potential, as institutional priorities often take precedence.

Funnel plots of patient-reported outcomes to evaluate health-care quality: Basic principles, pitfalls and considerations

Esmee M. van der Willik et al.

Summary: Funnel plots are a graphical method used to evaluate healthcare quality by comparing hospital performances on certain outcomes. When applied to patient-reported outcomes, there are additional challenges that require high response rates, adequate case mix correction and high-quality PRO measures.

A Narrative Review of Management Strategies for Common Symptoms in Advanced CKD

Maureen Metzger et al.

Summary: As attention to symptom management in advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) grows, there is increasing evidence regarding effective pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions to improve quality of life. However, research in this area is still limited, with major gaps including the lack of clinical practice guidelines and evidence for effective pharmacologic interventions.

Patient-reported experience with patient-reported outcome measures in adult patients seen in rheumatology clinics

Brittany R. Lapin et al.

Summary: Most patients reported positive experiences with completing PROMs, finding the questions easy to understand, useful, and improving communication with their physician. Younger age, non-white race, lower income, and being a new patient were associated with better experiences with PROMs.
