Governance and financial development: Evidence from a global sample of 120 countries

Summary: This study investigates the impact of governance quality on financial development using a global sample of 120 countries. The findings show that regulatory quality and political stability and absence of violence are positively associated with financial development, while voice and accountability, and government effectiveness are negatively associated with it. The degree of the impact of these governance indicators on financial development is relatively greater in high-income countries compared to low-income countries.

Summary: This study empirically examines the role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in triggering financial deepening in the Southeast Asian region, finding that FDI acts as an essential stimulator to financial deepening both directly and indirectly through money supply. Policymakers are recommended to carefully consider the channel of money supply and understand the dynamic role of institutional framework and other macroeconomic variables in this nexus.
