Maladaptive Daydreaming in Relation to Linguistic Features and Attachment Style

Rachele Mariani et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between maladaptive daydreaming (MD) and attachment style, reflective functioning, and the narrative dimension. The results suggest that MD is connected to psychopathological mechanisms, possibly related to sub-symbolic activation and dysfunctional self-other relational patterns.

The mind-in-mind study: A pilot randomised controlled trial that compared modified mentalisation based treatment with supportive clinical management for patients with eating disorders without borderline personality disorder

Miranda Sonntag et al.

Summary: Objective Mentalisation-based treatment (MBT) aims to improve reflective functioning and has been studied in eating disorder patients with co-morbid borderline personality disorder (BPD). This pilot study explored the use of MBT in eating disorder patients without BPD. Both MBT and standard treatment showed improvements in eating disorder symptoms and psychological well-being. However, MBT had greater improvements in reflective capacity, particularly in patients who achieved weight restoration at discharge. The study was limited by a small sample size and challenges in recruitment due to exclusion criteria for BPD.

Associations between schizotypal personality features, mentalizing difficulties and thought problems in a sample of community adolescents

George Salaminios et al.

Summary: The study examined the associations between specific schizotypal personality features and mentalizing difficulties during adolescence, finding that features like social anxiety and odd speech are linked to difficulties in mental state understanding. Mentalizing difficulties partially mediated the effects of these features on thought problems in adolescents.

Association between parent's and adult offspring's mentalizing capacity: The moderating role of child's temperament

Ana Jovancevic et al.

Summary: The study found that parents' mentalizing capacity significantly influences their children's mentalizing ability, with different types of temperament playing a moderating role in this relationship, particularly irritable and hyperthymic temperaments. The relationship between parents' mentalizing capacity and their children is especially significant for children with irritable temperaments.

Entrepreneurs' Capacity for Mentalizing: Its Influence on Burnout Syndrome

Guadalupe Manzano-Garcia et al.

'Rich' and 'poor' in mentalizing: Do expert mentalizers exist?

Simon Rogoff et al.

Summary: Mentalization theory focuses on individuals' ability to understand thoughts and emotions in themselves and others. The study found that Psychological Therapists scored higher on self-mentalizing compared to controls, while individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder displayed significantly lower scores in cognitive empathy. The research suggests differential impairments in mentalizing self and others between Psychological Therapists and BPD individuals.

Attachment Security and Suicide Ideation and Behaviour: The Mediating Role of Reflective Functioning

Jessica Green et al.

Summary: This study explores the link between adult attachment security and suicidal ideation, finding a direct relationship with attachment avoidance and suicidal ideation but no mediating role for reflective functioning. It also reveals that attachment anxiety and avoidance may play differential roles in increasing risk for suicide attempts versus ideation.

Alessio Gori et al.

Summary: This research evaluated the psychometric properties of a new self-report measure, the Multidimensional Mentalizing Questionnaire (MMQ), and investigated its ability to discriminate between community and clinical populations. The MMQ demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties and a theoretically relevant factor structure, with significantly greater impairment in mentalizing found in the clinical sample compared to the community one.

Depression in Belgian first-year university students: A longitudinal study of self-definition, interpersonal relatedness, mentalizing, and integration

David De Coninck et al.

Summary: This study investigated the severity of depression among first-year university students during their first semester and found that maladaptive interpersonal relationships and self-definition at the beginning of the semester were associated with an increase in depression prevalence and severity by the end. Additionally, uncertainty in mentalizing was positively associated with depression severity at the end of the semester and mediated the relationship between personality dimensions and depression severity.

Mentalizing mediates the association between emotional abuse in childhood and potential for aggression in non-clinical adults

Nicola-Hans Schwarzer et al.

Summary: The study found a link between childhood emotional abuse and aggressive behavior in adulthood, with mentalizing capacity partially mediating this association. This highlights the importance of mentalizing in mitigating the negative effects of early emotional abuse and its impact on adult aggressive behavior in non-clinical populations.

INTERPERSONAL PROBLEMS IN BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER: ASSOCIATIONS WITH MENTALIZING, EMOTION REGULATION, AND IMPULSIVENESS

Sebastian Euler et al.

Summary: Emotion dysregulation and attentional impulsiveness were found to directly predict interpersonal problems, while hypomentalizing indirectly affected interpersonal problems through emotion dysregulation and attentional impulsiveness. The results suggest that these domains significantly contribute to interpersonal problems in BPD, and that hypomentalizing may impact interpersonal problems via its effects on impulsiveness and emotion regulation.

Relations between attachment to mother and father, mentalizing abilities and emotion regulation in adolescents

Malgorzata Gambin et al.

Summary: Research has shown a negative relationship between attachment security to parents and the limited use of emotion regulation strategies in adolescents. Mentalizing abilities were found to mediate this relationship, with attachment to the father being a significant predictor of these abilities in adolescents. The importance of further investigating the role of father-child relationships in the development of mentalizing and emotion regulation abilities in adolescence is emphasized by the results.
