Fertigation with Zn-Lysine Confers Better Photosynthetic Efficiency and Yield in Water Stressed Maize: Water Relations, Antioxidative Defense Mechanism and Nutrient Acquisition

Faisal Shehzad et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of foliar-applied Zn-lysine (Zn-Lys) on maize growth and yield under limited irrigation. The results showed that Zn-Lys could mitigate the negative impacts of water stress on grain yield by improving photosynthetic efficiency, antioxidant defense mechanism, water relations, amino acid accumulation, and nutrient acquisition.

Seed Priming with Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Raises Biomass Production and Agronomic Profile of Water-Stressed Flax Plants

Muhammad Waqas Mazhar et al.

Summary: This study conducted a field experiment to investigate the significance of iron oxide nanoparticles as seed priming agents in alleviating water stress and improving the agronomic characteristics of flax plants. The results showed that seed priming with iron oxide increased plant growth, yield, and antioxidant enzyme activity, while reducing oxidative stress indicators. This demonstrates the potential of iron oxide particles in mitigating water stress.

Cadmium stress in plants: A critical review of the effects, mechanisms, and tolerance strategies

Taoufik El Rasafi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the deleterious effects of cadmium in plants and the evolution of tolerance and resistance mechanisms. Cadmium negatively affects seed germination, early seedling growth, and plant biomass, as well as photosynthesis, water content, transpiration rate, and electrolyte leakage. Plants have developed detoxification mechanisms to exclude or accumulate cadmium, and utilize signaling pathways, hormone synthesis, antioxidant systems, and other strategies to adapt to cadmium toxicity. Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in reducing metal phytoavailability and enhancing plant morphological and physiological parameters for cadmium tolerance.

A novel phenylalanine ammonia-lyase from Pseudozyma antarctica for stereoselective biotransformations of unnatural amino acids

Andrea Varga et al.

Summary: A novel phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PzaPAL) was identified from the psychrophilic yeast Pseudozyma antarctica, showing significantly different substrate binding pocket compared to known PALs. Recombinant PzaPAL exhibited higher turnover numbers than PcPAL and demonstrated enhanced enantiotope selectivity in both kinetic resolutions and ammonia addition reactions.
