Next-generation anti-VEGF agents for diabetic macular oedema

Matias Iglicki et al.

Summary: Intravitreal injections have improved the treatment of diabetic macular oedema (DMO), but real-world data shows a disparity between clinical trials and daily practice. Long-lasting drugs and devices may bridge this gap, offering more feasible treatment options to control the global epidemic of diabetic eye disease.

Summary: The 80-second multifocal pupillographic objective perimetry test showed promising diagnostic power for AMD in eyes with AREDS grades 2 to 4, comparable to the longer 6-minute mfPOP tests.

Correlation of Central Versus Peripheral Macular Structure-Function With Acuity in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Comparing Objective Perimetry, Matrix Perimetry, and Regional Retinal Thickness in Mild Diabetic Macular Edema

Bhim B. Rai et al.

Summary: The study compared per-region macular sensitivity and delay from objective perimetry with retinal thickness in mild diabetic macular edema (DMO). Results showed that mean sensitivities decreased and mean delays increased with duration of diabetes. Peripheral macular thickness correlated significantly with central and peripheral macular sensitivities and delays, providing sensitive prognostic data for DMO. These findings suggest that functional assessment may be crucial in the treatment decision for DMO patients as functional loss can precede structural changes.

An Objective Perimetry Study of Central Versus Peripheral Sensitivities and Delays in Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Bhim B. Rai et al.

Summary: The study compared central and peripheral retinal sensitivities and delays in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) using FDA-cleared multifocal pupillographic objective perimetry (mfPOP). Results showed that peripheral data significantly determined treatment frequency and final acuity, providing potential biomarkers to assist nAMD management. Peripheral responses preceding active disease changes by 1 to 3 months, indicating the potential of mfPOP in identifying the requirement for treatment.

Evidence for Structural and Functional Damage of the Inner Retina in Diabetes With No Diabetic Retinopathy

Giovanni Montesano et al.

Summary: The study provides evidence of early neuronal loss in the inner retinal layers of diabetic patients, with functional tests showing significant loss except in mesopic microperimetry. The structure-function relationship aligns with predictions from a neural model, but there are opportunities for improvement in functional tests to detect early loss more sensitively.
