Alas ... my sickness becomes my family's burden: A nested qualitative study on the experience of advanced breast cancer patients across the disease trajectory in Indonesia ...

Yayi Suryo Prabandari et al.

Summary: Limited research exists on the experience of living with advanced breast cancer in Indonesia. This qualitative study examined the narratives of women with breast cancer to understand their experiences from diagnosis to accessing and undergoing cancer treatments. The findings revealed that participants faced barriers and challenges throughout their illness trajectory, including dismissing initial symptoms, seeking alternative medicines, and encountering difficulties in accessing healthcare. The study highlights the importance of individual determination, belief in God, and family support in overcoming these challenges. The findings can inform the development and optimization of cancer care delivery for women with breast cancer in Indonesia.

The meaning of life according to patients with advanced lung cancer: a qualitative study

Jin Mei Zhang et al.

Summary: This qualitative study explores the meaning of life and end-of-life coping strategies among patients in China with advanced lung cancer. The analysis revealed that the meaning of life is a multidimensional and diverse concept, including self-iteration, self-reliance, altruism, and cherishing life. Patients' experiences of the meaning of life were observed in the past, present, and future. The study suggests that targeted professional guidance and psychological support can help patients discover their meaning of life, improve their quality of life, and achieve a positive end-of-life perspective.

Perceptions of time spent pursuing cancer care among patients, caregivers, and oncology professionals

Evan T. Hall et al.

Summary: Our study shows that the time spent undergoing cancer treatment has a negative impact on well-being, disrupting daily life and participation in meaningful activities for both patients and their caregivers. This suggests that further research into the personal time investment required for cancer therapy in patients with advanced solid tumors is necessary to improve communication between patients, caregivers, and oncologists.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
