Total Cholesterol Variability and the Risk of Osteoporotic Fractures: A Nationwide Population-Based Cohort Study

Dongyeop Kim et al.

Summary: This study found that variability in serum total cholesterol (TC) is associated with the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Higher TC variability was significantly associated with an increased risk of overall osteoporotic fractures, as well as vertebral and hip fractures. Maintaining stable TC levels may help reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures in the future.

Gamma-glutamyl-transferase is associated with incident hip fractures in women and men ≥ 50 years: a large population-based cohort study

W. Brozek et al.

Summary: This study found that elevated serum gamma-glutamyl-transferase (GGT) is associated with an increased risk of hip fracture, especially in men. GGT could potentially serve as a serum marker for long-term hip fracture risk in the elderly population.

Improved oral hygiene care and chronic kidney disease occurrence A nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study

Yoonkyung Chang et al.

Summary: The study found that oral diseases or poor oral hygiene may be linked to the development of chronic kidney disease. Improved oral hygiene (brushing teeth >= 3 times a day) was associated with a decreased risk of developing new-onset CKD. Additional interventional studies are needed to establish a causative relationship between oral hygiene and CKD risk.

Global, regional, and national burden of bone fractures in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Ai-Min Wu et al.

Summary: The global incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) of fractures showed a slight decrease from 1990 to 2019, but the absolute counts increased substantially. Older individuals have a particularly high risk of fractures, highlighting the importance of injury prevention efforts and osteoporosis screening and treatment for reducing the overall burden.

Visit-to-visit variability of serum uric acid measurements and the risk of all-cause mortality in the general population

Xue Tian et al.

Summary: This study found that higher variability in serum uric acid levels was independently associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in the general population, regardless of baseline levels and direction of variability. The associations were consistent across different categories of baseline serum uric acid levels.
