Comparative Characteristics and Pathogenic Potential of Escherichia coli Isolates Originating from Poultry Farms, Retail Meat, and Human Urinary Tract Infection

Jolanta Sarowska et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the phylogenetic background, virulence patterns, and drug susceptibility of 132 E. coli isolates and correlated these features with the source of bacterial isolation. The results showed similar virulence patterns between isolates from poultry farms and food, while the isolates from patients with UTI symptoms showed diverse virulence patterns. In terms of drug resistance, the three groups of isolates showed similarity.

Intensive Poultry Farming Practices Influence Antibiotic Resistance Profiles in Pseudomonas aeruginosa Inhabiting Nearby Soils

Shaheena Kousar et al.

Summary: The study found that P. aeruginosa isolates from soil around poultry farms had higher antibiotic resistance compared to isolates from areas away from the farms. The use of antibiotics in poultry farms significantly increased resistance in bacterial strains present in the surrounding soil.

Occurrence of Multidrug Resistant Escherichia coli in Raw Meat and Cloaca Swabs in Poultry Processed in Slaughter Slabs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Fauster X. Mgaya et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study conducted in five large poultry slaughter slabs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania between January and June 2020 found that 55.2% of the samples were positive for E. coli, with 69.3% of them being resistant to multiple drugs, showing high levels of resistance to tetracycline and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim. The study also identified ESBL producing E. coli strains, highlighting the risk of antibiotic resistance and the need for effective surveillance and control measures.

Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli Isolated from Broilers in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia

Shamsaldeen Ibrahim et al.

Summary: Salmonella and Escherichia coli are the most common infectious pathogens in poultry, showing high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in broiler farms on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The findings suggest the need for enhanced monitoring and control measures to prevent the emergence of antimicrobial resistance, potentially attributed to the excessive use of antimicrobial agents by poultry farm owners.

Poultry Litter Contamination by Escherichia coli Resistant to Critically Important Antimicrobials for Human and Animal Use and Risk for Public Health in Cameroon

Frederic Moffo et al.

Summary: The study reveals a high prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli isolated from poultry litter in Cameroon, indicating a significant public health risk. Factors such as lack of training and experience in poultry farming, as well as high frequency of digestive tract diseases, are associated with a greater likelihood of multidrug resistance in E. coli. The findings highlight poultry litter as a potential source of resistant bacteria transmission to the environment and humans.

Thermal stress and high stocking densities in poultry farms: Potential effects and mitigation strategies

Rana Muhammad Bilal et al.

Summary: Environmental changes pose significant threats to animal production, particularly poultry. Poultry health and productivity can be negatively affected by these changes, leading to issues such as reduced feed intake, growth, feed efficiency, immunity, and egg production. Research needs to focus on potential adverse effects of different environmental stresses on poultry performance, behavior, welfare, and reproduction.

Khyati Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: The study conducted in poultry farms of coastal Southern Karnataka, India, found high levels of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates, with a focus on resistance to fluoroquinolones and tetracycline. The most common resistance genes detected were qnrB, qnrS, and qnrA, with most isolates showing high MAR indices reflecting widespread antibiotic use.

Atnafu Bushen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the drug- and multidrug resistance patterns of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from chicken droppings at a university farm in southwest Ethiopia. The findings revealed common presence of E. coli, K. pneumoniae, P. mirabilis, and Salmonella species, with high resistance rates observed against certain antibiotics, highlighting the potential role of chickens in transmitting antibiotic-resistant bacteria to humans through the food chain.

Occurrence of the Colistin Resistance Gene mcr-1 and Additional Antibiotic Resistance Genes in ESBL/AmpC-Producing Escherichia coli from Poultry in Lebanon: A Nationwide Survey

Myriam Mikhayel et al.

Summary: This study identified the genomic characteristics of ESC-resistant E. coli in healthy broilers in Lebanon in 2018, revealing the alarming prevalence of MDR E. coli and the necessity to reduce the excessive use of antibiotics to limit their spread. The genetic diversity and wide dispersion of these resistance determinants suggest that they are spreading widely in enteric bacteria in Lebanese poultry, highlighting the importance of surveillance programs and interventions to mitigate antibiotic resistance in the country.

Antibiotic resistance of Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. strains isolated from healthy poultry farms in the districts of Abidjan and Agnibilekrou (Cote d'Ivoire)

Moumouni A. Assoumy et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels and patterns of antimicrobial resistance in Escherichia coli and Salmonella strains isolated from poultry farms in Cote d'Ivoire. The results showed variable resistance levels for different antibiotics tested, with high prevalence of resistance to certain antibiotics. It is important to implement policies promoting the rational use of antibiotics in animal production to manage antibiotic resistance.
