Neural circuits and activity dynamics underlying sex-specific effects of chronic social isolation stress

Tao Tan et al.

Summary: Exposure to prolonged stress during critical developmental periods increases the risk of psychiatric disorders and may lead to sex-specific consequences. Studying mice subjected to chronic adolescent social isolation stress, it was found that stressed males exhibit escalated aggression while stressed females show social withdrawal. In-depth analysis of neuronal circuits revealed different physiological mechanisms contributing to these sex-specific divergent effects of stress.

Individual baseline behavioral traits predict the resilience phenotype after chronic social defeat

Marija Milic et al.

Summary: The study investigated whether baseline individual characteristics of male C57BL/6J mice could predict the resilient outcome after chronic social defeat (CSD). The results showed significant differences in exploration levels, approach to novelty, and avoidance of harm between resilient and susceptible mice. Before the stress, resilient mice demonstrated higher exploratory drive and approach to novel environments, while susceptible mice showed better performance in avoiding potential adversity.

Organization of neural circuits underlying social behavior: A consideration of the medial amygdala

Tara Raam et al.

Summary: Recent advances have been made in elucidating the mechanisms by which the medial amygdala (MeA) regulates a diversity of social behaviors and its role within the broader network of regions that orchestrate social sensorimotor transformations. Molecular, anatomical, and electrophysiological features of the MeA have been outlined to distinguish distinct social behaviors, experimental strategies proposed to disambiguate sensory representations from behavioral function in social interactions, and considerations made on the extent of overlap between MeA function and other regions mediating similar behaviors.

Effects of inescapable stress on responses to social incentive stimuli and modulation by escitalopram

Stephen Daniels et al.

Summary: The study found that uncontrollable stress can negatively impact social reward functions in rats, but this impairment can be reversed by oral administration of the SSRI escitalopram.
