Seroprevalence and associated risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum infections in cattle in Central India

Bhavana K. Hebbar et al.

Summary: The study found high seroprevalence of T. gondii and N. caninum infections in cattle in India, with risk factors including age, movement of cats and dogs, rodents, drinking pond water, and abortion. Diagnostic tests showed good agreement, and most cases indicated chronic infection. Nationwide epidemiological studies are recommended due to economic importance of these infections.

A recombinant protein vaccine encoding Toxoplasma gondii Cyst wall 2 (dense granule protein 47) provides partial protection against acute and chronic T. gondii infection in BALB/c mice

Xiaowei Tian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective efficacy of TgCST2 antigen against T. gondii infections in BALB/c mice. The results showed that TgCST2 had strong immunogenicity and could elicit immune responses, making it a promising vaccine candidate. Moreover, this antigen could prolong the survival of infected mice and reduce the size and number of brain cysts.

Comparison of real-time PCR and nested PCR for toxoplasmosis diagnosis in toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis patients

Khadijeh Khanaliha et al.

Summary: This study compared real-time PCR with nested PCR using B1, SAG-4, and MAG-1 bradyzoite genes to diagnose toxoplasmosis in toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis patients. Real-time PCR showed higher sensitivity in detecting toxoplasmosis, particularly using PBMC samples. Utilizing B1 and other specific target genes in real-time PCR is recommended for accurate toxoplasmosis diagnosis.

Seroprevalence and risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection among veterinary personnel and abattoir workers in Central India

Abhijit S. Deshmukh et al.

Summary: The study revealed approximately 46%, 48% and 47% seropositivity rates among veterinary personnel and abattoir workers for Toxoplasma gondii infection, indicating a significant association between occupational exposure to animals and T. gondii seropositivity.

Toxoplasma gondii induces robust humoral immune response against cyst wall antigens in chronically infected animals and humans

Abhijit S. Deshmukh et al.

Summary: The differentiation of Toxoplasma gondii into latent bradyzoites is crucial for pathogenesis and transmission. While a strong humoral response has been reported against tachyzoite antigens, little is known about the antibody response towards bradyzoite antigens. This study found a robust humoral response against bradyzoite-associated cyst wall antigens across naturally infected animals and humans, with CST1 emerging as a key immunomodulatory antigen with potential implications for clinical immunodiagnostics.

Summary: Virus-like particles (VLPs) are virus-derived structures without genetic material, able to self-assemble and mimic viruses, utilized in candidate vaccines and successful applications in targeted drug delivery and gene therapy. Modifying the surface of VLPs for increased specificity and longevity in specific cells or tissues may enhance their future use.
