Phenotypic characterization of Raya cattle in northern Ethiopia

Amine Mustefa et al.

Summary: This study recorded 13 qualitative and six morphometric variables of 651 adult cattle from different districts to characterize the cattle populations in and around the breeding tract of Raya cattle. Results showed significant differences in traits between cattle populations from different locations, with Habru district being notably distinct from Raya cattle and Kobo district having the lowest measurement values. The study also identified key morphometric variables such as horn length, ear length, and height at wither that were important in discriminating cattle populations.

Multivariate characterization of phenotypic traits of five native cattle populations from Tigray, Northern Ethiopia

Tsadkan Zegeye et al.

Summary: The study investigated the phenotypic characteristics and variability of five native cattle populations in Tigray, Ethiopia, revealing significant breed differences and higher body measurements in Begait cattle. Discriminant analysis identified distinct breeds within the populations, with closer morphological distance between some populations. Confirmation with molecular genetic diversity investigation is recommended for conservation and breeding strategies.

Production, reproduction and some adaptation characteristics of Boran cattle breed under changing climate: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Merga Bayssa et al.

Summary: This study focused on the production, reproduction, and adaptation traits of Boran cattle through systematic review and meta-analysis. The results showed that Boran cattle can survive, produce, and reproduce under harsh environmental conditions, utilizing low-quality forage resources and resisting water shortage and tick infestations. The findings also suggested high genetic variability in Boran cattle traits and the possibility of genetic progress in the breed.
