Progress in health among regions of Ethiopia, 1990-2019: a subnational country analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Awoke Misganaw et al.

Summary: Health in Ethiopia has shown significant improvements across regions and chartered cities over the past three decades, but progress in socioeconomic status, life expectancy, total fertility rate, premature mortality, disability, and risk factors has not been uniform. In 2019, leading causes of premature mortality included neonatal disorders, diarrhoeal diseases, lower respiratory infections, tuberculosis, stroke, HIV/AIDS, ischaemic heart disease, cirrhosis, congenital defects, and diabetes. Public health strategies and interventions should be tailored to address regional disparities to achieve national and regional health goals.

Association between utilization and quality of antenatal care with stillbirths in four tertiary hospitals in a low-income urban setting

George N. Gwako et al.

Summary: The study found a significant association between lack of antenatal care, attending fewer than four antenatal visits, poor quality antenatal care as measured by surrogate indicators, and stillbirth. Women with low education level, obstetric complications, multiparity, and medical complications had a significantly higher likelihood of stillbirth. Improving the utilization of four or more antenatal visits and the quality of antenatal care can reduce the risk of stillbirth.

J. Zhu et al.

Summary: The stillbirth rate was 13.2 per 1000 births in China in 2015-2016 and nearly one-third of all stillbirths may be preventable. Regional strategies should be considered to reduce the burden of stillbirths in China. The study identified risk factors such as advanced maternal age, pre-pregnant obesity, and fetal anomalies associated with stillbirths.

The influence of travel time to health facilities on stillbirths: A geospatial case-control analysis of facility-based data in Gombe, Nigeria

Oghenebrume Wariri et al.

Summary: Access to quality emergency obstetric and newborn care, having a skilled attendant at birth, adequate antenatal care, and efficient referral systems are crucial in preventing stillbirths. A study conducted in Nigeria found that travel time from a woman's area of residence to a tertiary health facility was associated with the likelihood of delivering a stillborn baby. The study also revealed that women living farther than 60 minutes from the hospital were 12 times more likely to have a stillbirth compared to those living within 15 minutes away.

Barriers for kangaroo mother care (KMC) acceptance, and practices in southern Ethiopia: a model for scaling up uptake and adherence using qualitative study

Selamawit Mengesha Bilal et al.

Summary: This study identified barriers to KMC practice, including gaps in knowledge, attitude, and practices among parents of preterm and LBW babies; socioeconomic, cultural, and structural factors; community beliefs and values regarding preterm and LBW babies; health professionals' acceptance of KMC and motivation to implement practices; and shortage of supplies in health facilities. The study suggests a comprehensive approach with systematic interventions and support at maternal, family, community, facility, and health care provider levels, and proposes an implementation model that addresses the community to facility continuum.

Amniotic fluid disorders and the effects on prenatal outcome: a retrospective cohort study

H. Bakhsh et al.

Summary: The study reveals that diabetes mellitus and gestational diabetes are the most significant maternal risk factors for causing amniotic fluid disorders. Oligohydramnios is associated with gestational age, low neonatal birth weight, and high rates of vaginal deliveries, while polyhydramnios is linked to late gestational age, high birth weight, and higher cesarean section rates.

Summary: Distance and travel time to the hospital have a significant impact on stillbirth rates, with higher odds of stillbirths associated with travel times of 10-29 min, 30-59 min, and 60-119 min. Efforts to reduce stillbirth rates in urban low-income settings should focus on reducing travel time to quality care.

Neonatal mortality and its associated factors among neonates admitted at public hospitals, pastoral region, Ethiopia: A health facility based study

Abay Woday Tadesse et al.

Summary: Neonatal mortality is a significant public health issue in Ethiopia, particularly in the Afar region where rates are high. Factors such as lack of antenatal care, cesarean section delivery, low admission temperature, birth asphyxia, and longer hospital stays are significantly associated with neonatal mortality in this area. Prospective studies and improved antenatal and intrapartum care are recommended to address these challenges.

Time to first birth and its predictors among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia: inverse Weibull gamma shared frailty model

Reta Dewau et al.

Summary: The study conducted among reproductive-age women in Ethiopia revealed that early age at first birth is influenced by factors such as early marriage, age at first sexual intercourse, spousal age difference, and religion. Conversely, urban living, secondary and higher education were found to delay the first birth. Investing in women's education and protecting them from early marriage are necessary to optimize the timing of first birth. Contextual differences in time to first birth are important findings that warrant further research and interventions.

Factors associated with age of mother at first birth in Albania: application of quantile regression model

Ashis Talukder et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore risk factors determining the age of mother at first birth in Albania, using data from the Albania Demographic and Health Survey. Factors such as respondent's age, education level, and partner's education level were found to positively impact the age of mother at first birth, while rural area, partner's age, and smoking status had negative impacts. The study suggests prioritizing women's education and raising awareness through social activities to improve social conditions and increase the age of mother at first birth.
