Characterization of a highly stable zwitterionic hydrophilic interaction chromatography stationary phase based on hybrid organic-inorganic particles

Thomas H. Walter et al.

Summary: A sulfobetaine stationary phase based on 1.7 μm ethylene-bridged hybrid organic-inorganic particles was characterized for hydrophilic interaction chromatography, showing strong retention for polar neutrals and high selectivity for specific functional groups. The acid and base stability of this stationary phase was tested at extreme pH levels, supporting a recommended pH range of 2-10. Columns packed with this material showed greatly improved peak shapes for metal-sensitive analytes when compared to conventional stainless steel hardware.

Mapping and validation of major and stable QTL for flag leaf size from tetraploid wheat

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) for flag leaf length, width, area, and the length/width ratio in tetraploid wheat using recombinant inbred lines and a genetic map. A novel and major interval containing QTL for these traits was discovered and successfully verified in different genetic backgrounds. The study also detected and analyzed genetic associations between flag leaf-related traits and other agronomic traits. Several genes within this interval are likely involved in the growth and development of flag leaf size. Overall, this study provides important insights for understanding the genetic basis of flag leaf size and breeding wheat varieties with ideal plant structures.

Impaired SWEET-mediated sugar transportation impacts starch metabolism in developing rice seeds

Pei Li et al.

Summary: Sugar transportation and sugar-to-starch metabolism are crucial processes in seed development, and OsSWEET genes in rice play essential roles in these processes. Knocking out certain OsSWEET genes resulted in decreased pollen viability and weakened seed traits, indicating their importance in seed development.

Fluoride Stress-Mediated Regulation of Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle and Sugar Metabolism in Rice Seedlings in Absence and Presence of Exogenous Calcium

Ankur Singh et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of fluoride stress on TCA cycle and sugar metabolism in rice seedlings. It was found that calcium compounds could mitigate the negative effects of fluoride stress by restoring enzyme activity and gene expression levels. Additionally, calcium compounds helped conserve starch as the major food reserve, while reducing the utilization of sucrose to combat fluoride stress.
