Evolution of genome size and GC content in the tribe Carduinae limited environmental control and strong phylogenetic signal

Petr Bures et al.

Summary: Genome size and GC content can be used to identify polyploidy, hybridization, and other modes of genome or karyotype evolution. This study reconstructs the evolution of these traits in subtribe Carduinae, showing strong phylogenetic signals and suggesting weak environmental control on genome size. Genome size is positively correlated with GC content, stomatal guard cell length, and achene size, but achene weight and length are independent of genome size. Chromosome size increases with reduction in monoploid chromosome number, indicating descending dysploidy associated with chromosomal fusion.

Towards a monophyletic classification of Cardueae: restoration of the genus Lophiolepis (= Cirsium p.p.) and new circumscription of Epitrachys

Emanuele Del Guacchio et al.

Summary: Using molecular and morphological evidence, we confirmed the monophyly of Cirsium sect. Eriolepis and proposed to treat it as a separate genus. We also segregated Cirsium italicum into a separate genus based on molecular and morphological data, and published the name of a new hybrid genus. A total of 129 new combinations were proposed.
