A high-efficiency trichome collection system by laser capture microdissection

Wei Qin et al.

Summary: In this study, a method using laser capture microdissection (LCM) was developed to isolate glandular secretory trichomes (GSTs) from leaf epidermis without fixation. The method efficiently captured GSTs and enriched for related metabolites. This approach enables the study of pure plant cell populations and has the potential to discover novel secondary metabolites.

An R2R3-MYB Transcription Factor Positively Regulates the Glandular Secretory Trichome Initiation in Artemisia annua L.

Wei Qin et al.

Summary: The AaMYB17 gene has been identified as a positive regulator of GST initiation in Artemisia annua leaves, leading to increased artemisinin content. Overexpression or RNA interference of AaMYB17 does not affect plant growth or trichome morphology.

An HD-ZIP-MYB complex regulates glandular secretory trichome initiation in Artemisia annua

Lihui Xie et al.

Summary: The study identified key transcription factors, AaMYB16 and AaMYB5, that interact with AaHD1 to regulate glandular secretory trichomes (GSTs) initiation in plants. AaMYB16 was found to be a positive regulator while AaMYB5 had an inhibitory effect on GST initiation. The competitive interaction between AaMYB16 and AaMYB5 modulates the binding activity of AaHD1 promoter, providing new insights into the regulatory network controlling GST formation.

Isoprenoid Metabolism and Engineering in Glandular Trichomes of Lamiaceae

Soheil S. Mahmoud et al.

Summary: Isoprenoids play essential roles in plants and have significant impacts on human lives. Glandular trichomes are considered natural biofactories for mass producing rare industrially important isoprenoids. Engineering isoprenoid biosynthetic pathways in glandular trichomes could help meet the increasing demand for plant-based bioproducts.

The WRKY transcription factor AaGSW2 promotes glandular trichome initiation in Artemisia annua

Lihui Xie et al.

Summary: This study identified a molecular mechanism involving homeodomain and WRKY proteins that controls glandular trichome initiation, which is shared by Artemisia annua and mint cultivars. Overexpression of a specific transcription factor in A. annua significantly increased glandular secreting trichome density, demonstrating a potential strategy to enhance the production of valuable secondary metabolites like artemisinin.
